National Security Experts Alarmed At Trump’s “Dictator Moves”

The president has purged Pentagon leadership—including Defense Secretary Mark Esper—and installed his cronies in their place. 

Some 24 hours after firing Defense Secretary Mark Esper, President Donald Trump continued to wreak havoc on the Pentagon civilian leadership structure, removing multiple senior civilian officials and filling their positions with figures viewed as loyalists to the president—including someone who previously called former President Barack Obama a “terrorist leader.” According to CNN, the abrupt overhaul—referred to by one senior defense official as “the beheadings”—has sounded the alarm inside the Defense Department, which was already thrust into chaos by Esper’s ousting and is now facing further uncertainty as to what is on Trump’s agenda during the transition. “This is scary, it’s very unsettling,” a Pentagon official told CNN. “These are dictator moves.”

[The Pentagon’s acting policy chief James] Anderson was replaced by retired Brig. Gen. Anthony Tata, who was nominated to become under secretary of defense for policy earlier this year but had his nomination withdrawn after CNN uncovered a trove of Islamophobic and offensive comments he had made in addition to pushing “deep state” conspiracy theories. In 2018, Tata tweeted that Obama was a “terrorist leader” who did more to harm the U.S. "and help Islamic countries than any president in history." 

According to CNN, multiple civilian and military officials inside the department fear how the overhaul could undermine national security by allowing Trump to use “his final weeks in office to potentially again call for initiatives he wants to pursue that the Pentagon opposes,” CNN reports, such as again invoking the Insurrection Act to deploy active duty forces against future protests... While I don't disagree with the take on Trumps actions, I think our government and political system has to take real care on how they describe and handle the situation. Nearly 70 million people still voted for him. I still have faith that while he won't "concede" in a typical fashion that one way or the other he will be removed from office. 

What is troubling is that we are in the middle of a pandemic and many of the 70 million people who voted for him are already under huge amounts of economic anxiety and we don't want this to ultimately lead to mass scale civil unrest. 

Polling seems to suggest that majority of republicans don't think we had a free and fair election and that in of itself makes this country a failed state. We should have never gotten to a place where this could have happened and yet here we are.

In my workplace I am the only person who believes Biden will be inaugurated on Jan 20. My coworkers firmly believe that the election was complete fraud and the democratic party is stealing the election. They also believe every conspiracy theory Fox News suggests. This is a very scary time in this country and I sincerely hope that Trump's dumbass doesn't continue to escalate tensions while failing to transition or concede.

the way that you are more worried about how tr*mp supporters are responding to propaganda the way this administration wants them to instead of the democracy of our country as we now is about to totally demolished if some **** doesn't change soon

I really don't understand your point. I think it's absolutely important how they respond to this as they are the ones who believe the election is being rigged against them. And all I said is that the response should be taken with care which is to say that it has to be done right to prevent civil unrest. 

I don't know if you live in Trump country but I do and I would really prefer not having to wonder if I'm going to have crazy trumpers running around the street doing god knows what in my neighborhood because the media and the government pushes them over the edge.

they are only believing this because of lies and straight propaganda!!!!!!! there is absolutely not reason to believe this when there have been multiple independent organization and firms confirming there has been no such thing luv.... i also live in trump country and they're already doing all of that with no evidence of fraud as long as their leader tells them to believe that they aren't going to chance thoughts, they're part of a brainwashed cult at this point

Again, you keep ranting on about trump supporters to me when I don't actually disagree with you re: their insanity. All I said is that the situation requires tact because the partisan divide is at its most tense especially considering over 12 million people are currently unemployed and some of those who are working are either working part time, less hours or jobs with less pay than they had prior to the pandemic. 

 

TLDR: People are pissed off and democrats and other government officials need to be careful with how they proceed.
