Since I lived not too far from there, some background: If you look at California on a presidential map, we’re one of the most solidly blue states out there. However, central California, which is mainly fairly sparsely populated farmland, is pretty solidly red. Kern county, with Bakersfield, is about as red as Alabama. Fresno, the largest city in the area an hour to the north of Fresno, is also traditionally red, but has been turning blue because of its large Latin@ population. Just as the red part of middle America are considered the “flyover states”, this part of California is mainly the “drive through quickly” part of California—most people in California only go through this part of the state when they are driving on the freeway to go to and from southern California and northern California.
