So glad there are actually sane people in here who believe in democratic principles and that private corporations don't have the final say over what we do and say online.

Imagine arguing for and defending that. :poot:

Especially Facebook has been vital in the rise of the European far right/neo nazis because of the lack of intervention from Facebook itself and letting conspiracy theories spread like virus (lol).

This is what would happen if the gov't made these platforms follow these "free speech" rules. Exactly this, only bigger.

How about Biden nominates Susan Collins for a cabinet position? Make centre-right suburban female voters happy and possibly replace a Republican senator with a Democratic one in Maine through a special election :enigma: then after that seize the opportunity to get DC+PR statehood and fill the court.

I don't think Susan Collins will take the seat considering she won her re-election by a massive margin.

As for the Supreme Court, at least we know that Justice Breyer can be replaced since he's 82(!) years old. Hopefully we can put a young judge in that seat. Maybe Merrick Garland will finally have his hearing, but he's kinda old too (67).

They're private companies. What consequences? You being banned? If there's a terrorist attack tomorrow organized by users on Twitter, the government will intervene and probably fine Twitter for failing to properly moderate their platform, but that's because it's illegal to organize a terorist attack everywhere, not only on Twitter. Now, don't ask the government to make Twitter accept everything or almost everything while ignoring the rules they put in place in their own platform. Like I said twice already, you sign a contract when you sign up on social media. This is exactly the purpose of that contract. I'll stop because I'm repeating myself already.

Like I said what happens when Zuck and Jack decide that BLM isn’t allowed to use their platforms. What if 10 years ago they didn’t allow the No H8TE campaign?

Yes they can absolutely do both of those things. No one said it’s illegal.

You don’t care about what they ban or take down because you think they will always be the good guys and I do not.

But just keep being mean and posting

“private” and :rip: over and over again.

One more time TO BE CLEAR: they can ban whatever they want, but it concerns me. THAT is all.

I for one stand on the side of PEOPLE and human rights.

Not corporations and corporate rights to policing us all.

OT: PA election official on CNN now giving more results.

So you are okay with hate speech and wild conspiracy theories that spread quickly, and misinformation, to be allowed to run free on social media? If you aren't problematic, Twitter or any other social media site will not take your account down or monitor your posts. The rise of the far right has social media to thank. Trump supporters with guns at counting stations calling "fraud" has social media to thank. Its important that it gets stopped before it becomes a serious issue. Its already harmed people's lives.

I don't know why y'all discussing this, its literally a non-issue. :rip:

This is the same logic and reasoning people used when the government took sweeping surveillance changes with "well, if you aren't doing anything wrong then who cares if the government is recording everything you do!" :rip:

Doesn't make it right for them to take away our civil rights to do so though.

Sorry, but banning doesn't have to be the end goal for all those things. Suspend and flag? Definitely, but not outright ban. It also should be case-by-case.

Part of living in a free and democratic society is that some people are going to be ignorant, bigoted, and hateful, and spew their ignorant views. It sucks, but it is what it is and every country has people like that. When it escalates into violence that's different and becomes criminal, but the courts deal with that. Not corporations :awkney:

When people bring up stuff like this, I point out that there are government remedies we have for social media being run by a handful of monopolies because of the Metcalfe effect.

But, it doesn’t involve controlling what the social media companies can and can not ban. I don’t want to be in a world where GGD admins are legally compelled to, for example, not ban people for being obnoxious Katy Perry stans.

The solution involves the Sherman Act and seeing how we can break up Twitter and Facebook so that people can more readily find other platforms to express their views, such as GGD.
