The New York Times has not. In most races, The Times automatically accepts the race calls made by The A.P. But in the most important races, we independently evaluate whether to accept an A.P. call, based on our own analysis. The main reason we have not yet accepted the call in Arizona? We do not believe there’s solid enough data on the votes that remain to be counted after Election Day. The data we do have suggests that President Trump could fare well. Mr. Biden was and is still favored in our view. But on Tuesday night and afterward, there was no way to preclude, based on hard evidence, the possibility that Mr. Trump could win. That’s what a race call means to us. Ronald Reagan ignited the socially conservative religious people who felt left behind by blue collar democrats and Rockefeller republicans. They have never gone away and while it’s getting better, they have passed down their ideas to their children. They are one issue voters (abortion) and will vote for Satan himself if there were to be an “R” next to his name. So Trump comes in and automatically gets those votes, but he also capitalizes on the working class midwesterners who loved Barack Obama but ultimately felt left behind by him and that he didn’t keep his promises. Trump also had an easy opponent in Hillary Clinton who has been hated by women of a certain age since 1992. It’s easy to just write off Trump supporters as horrible racist people, and many of them are, but it’s a lot more nuanced than that. He represents an F U to career politicians and the establishment. But it’s all a lie. It’s kind of like a bunch of posers discovering the Ramone’s greatest hits and thinking they are now part of punk rock. As the culture shifts in America and smaller big cities become more cosmopolitan and interesting, you will see less and less of this. It’s happening in Texas, AZ and Georgia. The biggest problem with Middle Americans isn’t that they think abortion is murder or that they eat at the Olive Garden for a big night out. Or even how the vote. It’s that they don’t believe there is anything more attainable outside of that.
