Looks like #1 is more likely and the direction she it taking right now. The singles she put out in the last 2 years were more mainstrean and scored big hits with them. Ocasionally, she released more experimental or flamenco stuff (Juro Que, A Pale, Dolerme). To become the next Shakira she would need to start singing in English though and doesn't seem like it's happening but nonetheless she could get hits in Latin America and parts of Europe.
