A 12-year-old boy made the discovery of his lifetime when he found a dinosaur skeleton dating back 69 million years.

The amateur palaeontologist was out hiking with his father in a fossil-rich part of Alberta, Canada this July, when he saw bones protruding from a rock.

On Thursday, the skeleton's excavation was completed.

The boy, Nathan Hrushkin, says when he first laid eyes on the bones, he was "literally speechless". "I wasn't even excited, even though I know I should have [been]," he tells the BBC. "I was in so much shock that I had actually found a dinosaur discovery."

"This young Hadrosaur is a very important discovery because it comes from a time interval for which we know very little about what kind of dinosaurs or animals lived in Alberta,” said François Therrien, palaeo-ecology curator at the RTM. “The discovery that Nathan made is of great significance because it fills those gaps."

I find it fascinating that dinosaurs lived on Earth millions of years ago before homosapiens even existed. It's hard to believe, none of us had a conscious for billions of years and we get to experience life for 80-100 years if we're lucky. :nooo:

It always blows my mind that dinosaurs roamed the earth for MILLIONS of years. Recorded human history is what, less than 10,000 years? That is less than a fraction of a blink of an eye in the history of this planet.

During our lifetime we all probably walked on or travelled fields that had some fossils or artefacts hidden under them. The luck comes in actually discovering it.
