Y'all stil think it's good idea for Gaga to get this role regardless?  It will destroy her image that she have rebuilt so hard. :bradley:

Twitter is full of people who have no idea what they're talking about. Cleopatra was a European Macedonian/Greek woman... She was white. Read a history book please. :awkney: This isn't something that historians don't know. They've always known that she was from the Macedonian dynasty.

They keep saying "Arab roles" yet when Cleopatra ruled Egypt, there were no Arabs or Muslims in Egypt. :toofunny:

"Cleopatra was Greek, that doesn't mean she was white."

She is playing a role. She’s playing someone she’s not. That’s the whole point. Also wasn’t Cleopatra Greek?

I understand representation but i think its a bit much to be outraged by everything. At the end of the day, movies are stories and they are often reimagined by others. Its 100% true that Hollywood is not fair to POC. Its also true that we need a better distribution of high profile work for POC but that doesn't mean that we should police everything to be historically accurate 100% of the time.

She was. This whole thing is dumb.

As an Arab, Cleopatra being played by an Arab would be just as inaccurate.

This is giving me "Ancient Egypt was a black civilization" vibe for the sake of empowering minorities at the expense of looking stupid and literally spreading myths.

Just no to all of this drama. Ignore them and move on.

Edit: according to another comment, Cleopatra might have been mixed race according to a historian. If this fact is backed up by science/history then perfect. A mixed-raced woman or someone of Egyptian/North African descent would be ideal. Otherwise Gal Gadot is fine.

I didn't see this drama when they cast a British woman of White/Indian descent for the role of Jasmine in Aladdin (an as an Arab I think she was perfect and consider 1001 Nights to be Islamic rather than Arabic literature anyway, since it's originally Persian, but still where was the backlash then??).

It's known through DNA testing of other Macedonian Egyptian rulers (who Cleopatra was related to, the dynasty was inbred) that they were European and white to no surprise. Obviously Gal Gadot is slightly lighter than any Greek or Macedonian, but they're still white. A lot of Italians try to say they're not white because they're darker than the usual white person (in comparison to Americans, which are mostly English/Irish/German descendants). It makes no sense to say that Italians aren't white, right? So why should we say Greek people aren't white? They are all of the same race with of course, varying skin tones. This still doesn't change their race.

If there is such uncertainty as to what Cleopatra physically looked like, does it matter that who she's being played by?

Even if this is all low-grade cancellations, I'm glad it's not Gaga. But Denis Villeneuve better still have Gaga star in some movie that's as opulent as Cleopatra, just make it about someone where people won't be arguing about the race of the actor.  Or have her play some fictional si-fi queen.

I am just happy that it is not happening to Lady Gaga.

The future's uncertain and the end is always near.

I agree with you, but ancient Egyptians were black African people. There are still descendants of the true Egyptians in the south part of the country, close to Sudan. Those are what the ancient Egyptians looked like.
