sexy 3,215 Posted October 4, 2020 Share Posted October 4, 2020 Perfect Illusion, while a phenomenal and unique song in Gaga's discography, was ultimately a poor lead single choice and not representative of the album. I feel like lead singles often, though not always, set the tone for an era along with being a marketing tool (because it's usually one of the catchier songs). Perfect Illusion did neither of those things – PI sounds like it's from a different album than the rest of Joanne, and also made little sense as a potential hit. They would've been better off with A-YO or MR as the lead, both of which are catchier and fit Joanne better thematically. All of her other leads do a good job of roughly embodying their respective albums and also being bops, and so it's fitting that PI is her only lead single to miss the Top 5.
