Cyberpunk 2077 developers will be crunching, despite promises they wouldn't

Polish video game developer CD Projekt Red told employees on Monday that six-day work weeks will be mandatory leading up to the November release of the highly anticipated Cyberpunk 2077, reneging on an earlier promise to not force overtime on the project.

Red, a subsidiary of Poland’s biggest gaming company CD Projekt SA, has been criticized previously for engaging in “crunch,” an industry term for excessive overtime in game development. The practice often lasts for weeks and can stretch out for months or even years. CD Projekt Red co-chief executive officer Marcin Iwinski last year told gaming website Kotaku that the company would be avoiding mandatory crunch and was “committed” to allowing employees to work without overtime.

But an account from a CD Projekt Red employee recently as well as an email to staff earlier this week indicate that the company hasn’t lived up to its word. The employee, who asked not to be named discussing private information, said some staff had already been putting in nights and weekends for more than a year.

i feel so bad for the Developers tbh. The amount of stress just to meet the deadline that mind you, has been delayed several times, must be horrible.

REALITY

I can only imagine the kind of stress that those developers have to go through. I'm only a junior in college and I'm struggling with some basic programming projects :bradley:

They should just delay it until Christmas or something. I'm super excited for this game, but I also want it to be done right without the need of constant and overwhelming stress for the developers. Delay it for as long as you need to to make sure that the game comes out right.

I’m a programming student too and handling codes just to make a basic app is already stressful for me 😭 can’t imagine those developers ugh the gaming industry sucks :interestinga:

We've been knew. With covid going on they can simply not afford to push back the game for another few months. Luckily the crunch is only for a month and a half and not years.

I’ve been hearing all these things about this game and how it’s supposed to he amazing. I should really check out a trailer or something.

OT: Cant they just delay the title like 3 weeks. Wouldnt that make up for the crunch

With all these delays, this game better live up to the hype. I’m so scared it’s going to be a huge disappointment :laughga:

Exactly this. To quote Miyamoto over from Nintendo

"A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad."

Man CDPR is so pro-consumer. This game has already been pushed back and the fan base is okay with the delays. I’m sure they’re not taking the decision to crunch lightly.
I just hope they look out for their employees as well. :ohno:

I know :saladga: I'm majoring in game design and simulation and it's already a struggle. Looking forward to graduating one day but I already know the game industry is a very stressful industry to be in.

As for the game, I've been really excited for it and the anticipation is killing me. But if they need more time I hope they'll take it. They've already pushed back the release several times but it's okay because we know the work being put in. Hopeful that this was more of an overall team decision rather than an unpopular push by management/executives.

They have already delayed it twice. They cant afford to do it again and they have promised that it will be released nov 19th. It wouldnt be a good look for them if they broke that promise and CD Project Red is the most trustworthy gaming company right now. Unlike other studios, they compensate for their work.

I was so excited about the game at first.  I understand how much work goes into a video game. Some people need to understand that games today are not just coding and programming (albeit there is a lot of it) and require a lot more work to produce. Hence the prices of most games nowadays.

My heart goes out to the devs. I understand that they are trying to push the game before other big titles arrive in November/December, but this is just nonsense.

Until then, this is Elvira saying unpleasant dreams.
