That being said,  I’m pretty sure they came up with the whole “If we don't stand up for what we believe in, pretty soon we're going to have as much rights as the meat on our bones” after they came up with the Meat dress idea. It all just happened to be relevant to eachother and she made a connection which worked out. I still think she cared about that message a lot tho and was always planning on speaking about DADT at the VMAS. 

I think it's the opposite.

She was in that whole "pushing the message and amping up the heat hard enough" mode. I firmly believe that she wore the dress, especially as a final outfit, to shine light on and bring more attention to the issue. The association was not an afterthought, merely a way to make the issue digestible for the public.

If you look at the chronological order of events:

The Vogue Hommes Japan issue came out Sep 7

VMAs were on Sep 12.

She used that whole following week to speak on DADT. This video was uploaded on Sep 17 

 

And this was on Sep 19 in Maine where she gave her "Prime Rib of America" speech to tie it all together

It was all very intentional and strategically timed and brilliantly orchestrated by her and her team because this was what caused the DADT Repeal movement to get louder. She is truly amazing.

And yes, she was also a popstar who generated publicity for herself, but so what... that's her job.
