Florida GOP increases voter registration, closes gap

MIAMI — Republicans have closed the traditional voter registration gap with Democrats to an historically small margin in Florida, triggering a wave of Democratic apprehension in the nation’s biggest swing state.

Top Florida Democrats and longtime activists have increasingly groused in private that they feel pressure from Joe Biden’s campaign to refrain from door-to-door canvassing or holding voter registration drives due to the potential spread of the coronavirus and fears of muddying his messaging on the pandemic.

In the absence of such efforts, a concerted drive by President Donald Trump’s Florida campaign to register voters has helped cut the state’s long-standing Democratic advantage to fewer than 185,000 voters, a gap of just 1.3 percentage points, according to data from the Florida Division of Elections released this week.

“It’s late in the game now,” said state Sen. Jason Pizzo, a Miami Democrat. “There’s been no pushback from us, meaning that for every 100 doors that Republicans have proverbially knocked on, it’s not like they pissed people off to the point where they’ve run to the Democratic Party because they’re pissed at the GOP. It’s shown to be effective.”

In August, Republicans added a party record of almost 58,000 new voters — a 91 percent increase compared to August 2016, the Florida election data show. The number of new Republicans added in August is 41 percent more than the number of new Democrats who registered. Democratic registration, meanwhile, was 6 percent lower than the total racked up in August 2016.

Now that DeSatan has lifted all restrictions Democrats need to be out there knocking on doors (while mask wearing, social distancing, etc). What are they even doing??? This invincible campaign is not working.

When Delaware hit Phase 2 of reopenings canvassing was something the Governor here said was allowed to resume. The campaign I’m working on (Eric Morrison—and several news outlets picked up his win from the State Primary) did just that and it created a huge advantage for us. It’s not like we were going inside people‘s houses or all up in their faces.

It's pretty obvious at this point that Trump is going to win Florida, I never expected otherwise. We should be more focused on the rustbelt, which is where the election this year is going to be decided.

Latino support for Trump in Florida is something like 38% which is really bad.

The Democratic Party really messed up and misread the electorate, particularly the Latino community.

They're not here for Biden or the Democrats and I don't blame them. Nothing will really change with them in control, and Dems don't fight for the issues that matter most of the time since they're weak af and told by their corporate overlords to only focus on the symbolic stuff.

Hate to break it to you but Floridians are supporting Republicans this time around because they think Dems have gone too far left. This has nothing to do with any party’s competence.

Umm the party decides where and how to campaign. If they lose Florida it is EXACTLY due to their incompetence in campaigning. And too far left with Joe Biden? I don't think I've heard a more ridiculous statement in my entire life.

They’ve been pumping millions of dollars into Florida. The big story not so long ago was that Bloomberg put in 100 million of his own money into the state to help Joe. They’ve got a large umber of volunteers on the ground as well.

You’re clearly someone who hasn’t been following the election because there’s been plenty of conversation regarding Florida’s perception of the Democrats becoming “socialists” because of the popularity Sanders and Warren saw. Trump has also been doubling down on calling Joe and Kamala socialists. This type of fear mongering in Florida works because there are millions of people who have fled or know someone who has fled a country that calls itself socialist.
