I’d recommend checking your privilege when you can resign to not voting because you aren’t happy with either. One isn’t putting children in cages, signal boosting white supremacists and straight up ignoring human rights violations against black people. One isn’t straight up authoritarian and making an enemy of the press. They are not alike, at all. If you’re unable to put your purity test aside to help avoid a cataclysmic outcome for people less fortunate than you, then you’ve failed us. There is no purity test to take after November 3rd if Donald Trump is elected.

You see, I thought I was done with this thread because it was getting toxic, but this I must respond to.

You realize there are thousands of people that will die under Biden’s presidency if he’s elected because he has vowed not to pass universal health care during a pandemic, right? Should these people also check their privilege? If so, when should they check their privilege? In the afterlife, after Joe Biden’s health care failures killed them?

Also, do you know who built those cages? Also, do you know how many deportations happened under BIden/Obama?

Also, the humans rights violations against black people are being committed by who? The police, right? Who do you think wrote the bills that have resulted in so many police occupying our streets?

The Obama admin. prosecuted a whole bunch of whistleblowers, so we should expect a Biden presidency to also be detrimental to a free press.

As far as their similarities, they’re both racists.

They’re both rapists.

They’re both against universal health care and are, therefore, in support of a continuation of the tens of thousands of preventable deaths that occur every single year.

They’re both pro-police and want to expand our police force.

They’re both beholden to billionaires (or are billionaires themselves).

They’re both imperialists.

If you’re unable to understand why someone might not want to vote for Biden for a reason other than them being “privileged,” I question your knowledge of history.

I could care less who everyone votes for so long as we are not misrepresenting who the candidates are.

Lastly, I could just as easily say that you voting for a candidate who has vowed to deny people of health care during a pandemic is the privileged position. There are bigger problems in this country than Donald Trump.

Honey, if the Democratic party was “left-wing,” like you say, I would support them. The problem is that they’re a right-wing party.

If the Democrats are left-wing (they’re not), what are the socialists, communists, anarchists, etc.?

The most basic right imaginable, the right to life, will not be secured with Biden. There will be thousands of preventable deaths even if he successfully implements his terrible health care plan.

You can vote for whoever the f*ck you want. But please stop lying. We have to be better than this.

In the US (which is what we are referring to here)...Republicans are the right wing. Democrats are the left wing. You making up something doesn’t make it different.

They are communists, socialists and anarchists.

The right to life is gone and it will get worse under Trump. If Trump takes away the ACA and continues to ignore the Pandemic, he will cause hundreds of thousands of deaths. There is absolutely no comparison between Trump and any Democrat here. Trump is a millions times worse than any one of them.

I’m voting for someone who will promote human rights and care about citizens of this country.

This is yet ANOTHER reason why I punched in my ticket for Biden today.

I can't believe that this is how America is now, he needs to be stopped somehow.

In an urgent appeal on Thursday, Sen. Bernie Sanders said President Trump presented "unique threats to our democracy":

"This is not just an election between Donald Trump and Joe Biden," he said. "This is an election between Donald Trump and democracy — and democracy must win."

@TheQueenLG I understand what you're saying. I'm a democratic socialist and to me to the Democratic party in the USA is at least centre-right by European standards. I think it's because the centre in American politics is actually on the right, which gives the perception that the Democrats are left-wing socialists, when I would say that they're more like social democrats, or even modern liberals, the latter of which is similar to the Liberal Democrats here in the UK. If I could vote though, I would vote for Biden. He's not the candidate I would want, but compared to the other option, I think it's better. Although I understand your concerns, in particular with fracking, which I am completely against.

Thank you for being reasonable.

In American politics we are told, in every Presidential election, that we must vote for the lesser of two evils because the current election is so important.

I understand that Trump is bad, but so is Joe Biden, even if he is slightly less bad.

I feel at some point voters have to draw a line in the sand or else they will always be voting for candidates that are the lesser evil, which is still evil.

Would you support a reform of first past the post? I feel as though that this is often part of the problem as it usually creates a two-party system in which the major two parties become very similar in order to appeal to a broader range of voters. Although we have a multi-party system in the UK, no minor party has a real chance of winning an election, leading to the choice in reality only being between Labour or the Conservatives, which I feel at times makes people more polarised and also disenfranchised as they don't feel as though they have a legitimate choice. Although I'm in the Labour party, I'm often at odds with them, as I'm usually on the fringes campaigning for more extensive reforms and policy commitments.

I understand that and agree, and we need to get to a point where our presidential choice is someone we can fully get behind. Unfortunately, a two party system representing what are essentially 50 countries in one is never going to sustain that goal. We need at least four parties, a fully democratic primary system, and we need to abolish the electoral college. These changes can’t just happen out of thin air with policy, they require a massive cultural evolution. That will take time, and lots of convincing.

The situation right now is that we have an authoritarian in office who is deliberately attempting to stay in office regardless of the will of the people, who is completely uninterested in handling a pandemic that’s killing us. The opposing candidate has a plan to sustain the virus and wants to sustain our democratic foundation. To  draw a line in the sand now means that Trump’s opposition will not be large enough to put him away. Republicans are a monolith, and Democrats embody everyone else. It isn’t fair that Democrats are fragmented by nature, but we need to understand the game and show up.

I grew up in a war torn country with a government and culture completely ravaged by demagoguery. I think Americans believe that their foundation is strong enough to withstand another 4 years of Trump, but it isn’t. This country will break beyond repair. It’s broken now, but we need the chance to fix it.

Basically, I think it’s important that we see the nuance of this and make the less destructive decision. And it’s just a vote. It’s not like we’re asking you to throw away your beliefs. Just do the smart thing in this moment. Not voting doesn’t stop one of the two from winning.

First of all, thank you for taking the time to write up a thoughtful, civil response.

Yes, a two-party system in which both parties are owned/controlled by rich oligarchs will never represent me. That’s why I refuse to vote for either of the parties.

We don’t have the time that you speak of. We have 10 years to make significant, structural changes to our policies or  climate change’s worst effects will be inevitable and unpreventable. We don’t have time to wait this out another few elections.

We do not have a democratic foundation. I think that’s where we’re in disagreement. You believe we have a democracy to save. I disagree.

I also don’t think electing the candidate who has taken money from the most billionaires (this is Biden) is productive in sustaining our “democratic foundation.”

Democrats do not embody me.

I just disagree that Trump is some unique threat that is exponentially worse than past GOP Presidents. He’s just more open about his evilness.

We do this dance every four years: maybe we’ll draw the line next time. Maybe we’ll put our foot down next time. Maybe we’ll do it when this super bad boogeyman is out of office. We don’t have time to keep playing this game.

Joe Biden will not fix this country. He has promised his donors that nothing will fundamentally changed.

In the same way that you say “not voting doesn’t stop one of the two from winning”, I say that voting for Joe Biden doesn’t fix the problems in our country because he has promised not to fix them.

In addition, he instructed his potential voters not to vote for him if they believe Tara Reade. And I do.

I think you and I agree on a lot, and again, I think your assessment is fair. I do disagree with your saying that Trump is only more destructive than other presidents because he’s open about it, and I also believe that Americans are spinning out because we have been basically leaderless this past year. However, why can’t we fight for these principles and hold people accountable while also getting a less destructive person in the White House in the meantime? That’s my issue with all this. We can keep our eye on the end goal policy-wise while also making pragmatic, common sense decisions in the meantime. Again, a winner between these two must be determined. Voting for Biden coz he’s a slightly better candidate (as you said) won’t take away from our end goals. If anything it’ll get us there faster.

At the end of the day, obviously this is your country as well and it’s your choice whether to help get Trump out or not. I just wouldn’t want you to be on the other side of this election with a Trump victory and think “why the **** didn’t I show up”.
