JusKeepBreathin 19,311
Gov. Ron Desantis gave an announcement this morning. Citizen and Taxpayer Protection Measures A. No “Defund the Police” Permitted: Prohibits state grants or aid to any local government that slashes the budget for law enforcement services. B. Victim Compensation: Waives sovereign immunity to allow a victim of a crime related to a violent or disorderly assembly to sue local government for damages where the local government is grossly negligent in protecting persons and property. C. Government Employment/Benefits: Terminates state benefits and makes anyone ineligible for employment by state/local government if convicted of participating in a violent or disorderly assembly. D. Bail: No bond or bail until first appearance in court if charged with a crime related to participating in a violent or disorderly assembly; rebuttable presumption against bond or bail after first appearance. Basically this would have made Charlottesville Nazi Murder James Fields a free man, for plowing his car into a crowd and killing Heather Heyer, instead of being charged for murder. G U C C I 5,578
I am all for freedom of speech and the right to protest! However, as with any rights there are also responsibilities. No one should be blocking roads and intersections prohibiting other citizens from going about their day or emt's trying to reach people in emergencies. Your protest doesn't stop me from having to be at work on time nor is it more important than someone who needs medical attention. Sorry. I support your right to voice your complaints and concerns and I hope it brings about change but do it safely for you and everyone else.

Galactic Mess 1,393
I think the most worrying parts are the possibility to cut state benefits for those involved in disorderly protests and the obstruction of streets during "unpermitted" protests. I mean, do you need permission to protest in the US? In my country you just need to warn the authorities beforehand, and they can only disband the protest if another one is already scheduled for the same time and place. The main issue with all of this is that anyone taking part in the protest will have to answer for agressions/vandalism perpetrated by a few, which will scare people away from protests in general. Looks like censorship
