US to ban TikTok downloads on Sep. 20

The Trump administration says it will effectively cripple WeChat, the mobile chat/payment service popular with millions of Chinese Americans, on Sunday.

And the administration says it will do the same thing to TikTok, the mobile video service popular with tens of millions of Americans — but only after the November election.

Friday’s news combines several different strands of politics, policy, and realpolitik: Legitimate concerns about China’s ability to exert influence in the US via consumer technology; American electoral politics; and links between US tech executives and investors with the White House.

But the top line is straightforward: The Trump administration is getting tough with China by shutting down one important Chinese-owned app in the US — while keeping another important Chinese-owned app, with ties to Trump supporters, running throughout the fall.

Department of Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross announced the moves in a press release Friday morning, and then spelled it out more explicitly in an interview with Fox Business News: “For all practical purposes [WeChat] will be shut down in the US, but only in the US, as of midnight Monday.”

TikTok, meanwhile, will be allowed to keep operating in the US through November 12, so existing users of the app will not be affected. But Trump’s decree is meant to force Apple and Google to remove TikTok from their app stores — which means the service can’t add new users — and to prevent TikTok from updating the app for existing users.

No doubt TikTok has security issues, but the random puppy videos cheer me up a lot so I will be sad. 

You won't be able to download it anymore but without updates the app will slowly die anyway

You have to root your phones for that. Don't think most regular people do that.

 

Also, if you have installed, you won't get app updates which is risky.

The app was made by Chinese developers who purposely coded spyware algorithms into it to collect data on the people who use the app — including all the minors who use it. It’s not as surface level as “dictatorship videos” — it’s about the fact that a literal Communist government currently committing abhorrent crimes with concentration camps is collecting info from other countries’ citizens under the guise of a “fun social media app”.  Any user here bragging about how this suddenly makes them way more interested in TikTok is being willfully ignorant of the true scope of what’s really going on here.

By the way, don't be overdramatic. USA will not be Middle East, we have first amandement here that protects free speech, literally no other apps been banned besides Chinese products that are deemed problematic. 

Also, Chinese spying is unlike Western world spying. Just keep in mind they are major allies to Russia and North Korea, USA need to protect their security and it is their preogative, especially when a lot of experts predicts that, shall it happened, the next world war will starts as cyber war first before shooting war.

Besides, USA is not the first country that banned Chinese apps, India already did it beforehand. But it certainly wouldn't be the last, cos Chinese apps is that dodgy, mates. Take a look around. Even Japan now considering for the same action, and they are usually cool with all techie stuffs.

I thought a U.S. company was supposed to take operations over for the U.S. so that Chinese access wasn't a concern? And people would still rather have it banned? Sounds like the issue for people here isn't privacy concerns, but them just wanting the app gone because they happen to not like it.
