Plus u have to factor in how much this is affecting society. In addition to some deaths, the restrictions in place to try and reduce spread are ruining economy, businesses and people's livelyhoods

 

A drunk driver typically will only kill another driver or pedestrian (not to deminish the seriousness of that tho)... A party on the other hand that causes an outbreak during a pandemic can cause life affecting restrictions that affect people in an entire Nation to stay longer in Canada's case almost 40 Million people

 

Drunk driving affects the immediately affected by an accident and their friends and family. An outbreak during a pandemic affects an entire Nation. So if u look at it that way it is a bigger deal than a DUI

 

I would also argue that the DUI fines are low anyway plus if ur gonna compare them on a relative basis a DUI isn't just the fine itself as punishment. It's the demerit points, license suspension and higher car insurance rates. The fine is really the smallest consequence of the DUI in most cases

Keep in mind that:

Ford said that starting Friday in Toronto, Ottawa and Peel region, gatherings are now limited to 25 people outdoors and 10 indoors. Those new caps don't extend to places such as restaurants, movie theatres, banquet halls, gyms and convention centres.

Ford said that the new gathering limits don't apply to those areas or to schools, because those places have "really strict protocols in place."

It doesn't apply to all areas in the province, and the limits are really for house parties. I confess that I have no idea if there are really so many parties to warrant this change from the government.

Well a very high percentage of cases are indeed being traced back to parties. Disproportionately a higher amount relative to other stuff ppl feared like gyms and restaurants

 

Part of the reason may be cuz most businesses actually enforce distancing and masks while at parties many just don't give a dam
