Yesterday Canada's largest Province announced tougher consequences were coming for those who break Covid-19 rules especially among refusals to wear masks where required and house gatherings that exceed the limit

 

Today it was announced that the fines will be a minimum of $10,000 for whoever hosts a gathering/party over the limit as well as $700 for each guest

Good! Expensive fines are the best way to make sure rules will be respected in my opinion, I'm totally up for that, and other countries should do the same thing tbh

This seems really excessive to me, especially since a DUI in Ontario carries a $550 fine; so it's 20 times worse to have a house party than drive intoxicated?

Yes, considered that the chances of dying from covid is probably much higher than a drunk driver at the moment.

Oh wow, that sounds like a lot of police patrolling in neighbours and people calling 9-1-1. Maybe that's why I've been seeing more cop cars in the city today than usual. We'll have to see if that's what we want.

Keep in mind that:

Ford said that starting Friday in Toronto, Ottawa and Peel region, gatherings are now limited to 25 people outdoors and 10 indoors. Those new caps don't extend to places such as restaurants, movie theatres, banquet halls, gyms and convention centres.

Ford said that the new gathering limits don't apply to those areas or to schools, because those places have "really strict protocols in place."

It doesn't apply to all areas in the province, and the limits are really for house parties. I confess that I have no idea if there are really so many parties to warrant this change from the government.

Considering how far reaching the consequences can be from having a party and spreading covid at that party, the fine seems just right to me
