Louisville settles Breonna Taylor's wrongful death lawsuit

The city of Louisville, Kentucky, has agreed to pay $12 million to the family of Breonna Taylor and institute a series of police reforms to settle the family's wrongful death lawsuit.

Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer, Taylor's family and their attorneys announced the settlement in a joint press conference on Tuesday. Taylor, a 26-year-old EMT, was killed in her home by police on March 13.

As part of the settlement, the city agreed to establish a housing credit program to incentivize officers to live in the areas they serve; use social workers to provide support on certain police runs; and require commanders to approve search warrants before seeking judicial approval, among other changes.

"In Louisville, Kentucky, we took significant steps today in the name of Breonna Taylor of trying to correct this broken criminal justice system," family attorney Benjamin Crump said.

Crump added that he believed the $12 million payout is the largest amount ever paid out for a Black woman killed by police in the US and possibly the most ever for a Black person killed by police.

Crump, attorney Lonita Baker and Taylor's mother, Tamika Palmer, all continued to push for criminal charges against the officers despite the civil settlement.

I agree -- While the money settlement is great for the family it doesn't really prevent this from happening to other people of color

Exactly. 

The money and the "promise" to reform the police program of the city is just a show for the public so we stop talking about it. This solves nothing.

The way these things are done just to appease the masses whole the real problems aren't tackled is disgusting. This is just a small tip of the iceberg, I probably don't want to know all the things that are going on behind the scenes and that are being covered up.

It's crazy what power and money can do to people and an entire 'justice system'. It's all pure nepotism.

im sorry but a civil settlement of 12 millions dollar is "power and money" "covering up" "to appeal the masses" ? The family got a record breaking amount, without going through a civil trial, and this is your comment?

This is how the civil justice system should work. This is justice. its not the end of the story. civil lawsuit is completely separate from a criminal lawsuit. 

This is objectively good news.

It's sad, really. The cops responsible still have their jobs, the system stays corrupt, and an entire group of people remain targets.

It helps the family, yes, but I think the frustration stems from many similar cases that never got closure. Trayvon Martin was killed in 2012 and the gun used to shoot him was sold for like $200,000 online a few years ago.. Most of us only see these things for as long as their media coverage shelf life but the racism is very deeply rooted in our society.

I understand your reaction. I'm not saying that them getting financial compensation is a bad thing, that's the least they could do.

But as far as I've read the cops who did this still aren't charged. That's what's the problem for me. How are they still not convicted for this?

To me it seems they gave such an excessive amount of money to make people feel like justice has been served (appeal to the masses) but the problem isn't being taken care of. I am very much convinced no further actions will follow and this will die down. (Covering up)

The amount of money doesn't they give doesn't matter to me. All I want is them to be honest, take responsibility for the actions of their cops and take action against them. Which isn't being done right now. I'm also afraid Breonna's case isn't a unique one, this one was just the one that got spread in the media.

I disagree. It is you using very strong and inflammatory language (for which you really have no real factual basis) to further a point (that you have the right to believe in) that is completely unrelated to this side of justice. 

 

The civil lawsuit is completely unrelated with the criminal prosecution. This lawsuit is between the city and the family. The criminal investigation and prosecution is first (1) in the hands of the police; (2) then with the prosecutors and the accused.  

You think that justice will be only completely serve when the police officers are prosecuted? Fine. This has nothing to do with the civil lawsuit, and using the lawsuit to further your point of view on the criminal justice system and police reform is twisted and actually weakens your position.
