NH Primary Results: Sanders Loses, Trump Wins

The results are in from the New Hampshire congressional, gubernatorial, and senatorial primaries: Bernie Sanders had a rough night while President Trump's preferred candidates advanced. Incumbents crushed longshot challengers across the board, in some cases by 80-point margins. Below is a more detailed breakdown of the results. 

 

Chris Sununu, one of New England's three Republican governors, won over 80% of the vote against libertarian activist Nobody and staunchly conservative radio host Karen Testerman. With the victory, the fairly moderate incumbent turned away one of his most vocal critics during the pandemic and will likely take the overwhelming victory as a mandate to continue coronavirus-related restrictions on gatherings and school openings. 

 

On the Democratic side, Senate Majority Leader Dan Feltes eked out a victory over Executive Councilor Andru Volinsky. Volinsky was backed by Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT), though he won less counties than Sanders did in February. Feltes represents the establishment wing of the party, but isn't expected to go much easier on Sununu (who has vetoed various pieces of legislation with his name on it.) Priorities for Feltes include a paid family leave plan and increased gun control; he will need heavy Democratic turnout- and minimal ticket-splitting- if he wants to pick off the mansion. 

 

Jeanne Shaheen, a former governor and current Senior Senator, beat two no-names in the Democratic primary and is likely- at least as the race stands now- on her way to a third term in the Senate. She is a reliable voice for Democratic priorities including protecting funding for Planned Parenthood and building on Obamacare; according to 538, she votes with Trump about 1/3 of the time. 

 

Corky Messner, who is running on a mainstream conservative platform and had Trump's endorsement via Twitter in the primary, won pretty comfortably over General Don Bolduc, as both tried to position themselves as the outsider in the race. Messner supports business-friendly policies such as a low corporate tax rate, and also opposes abortion and illegal immigration. He starts the general election race as a the underdog and will need to make up some fundraising ground; additionally, Bolduc refused to endorse him this morning and it's possible his primary voters shun Messner and refuse to vote for him come November. 

 

Matt Mowers, a former foreign policy wonk in the Trump State Department handily dispatched with Air Force veteran and party regular Matt Mayberry in the first district as the national GOP battles to oust Pelosi ally Chris Pappas, who was unopposed in his primary race. Mowers is seeking to cast Pappas as weak on China and rioters, building his campaign on the dual planks of using his foreign policy knowledge to squeeze the CCP and defend law enforcement officers from calls to defund departments. 

 

Annie Kuster, who represents the state's more rural 2nd District, coasted to victory over a little-known and scarcely-funded challenger. She will be looking to defend her seat and pursue issues such as creating a public medicare option for health insurance, which she is favored to do. Kuster is also expected to campaign for Joe Biden, and a win for him will likely be accompanied by a win for her; voters there haven't split the ticket this way since 2004. 

 

Steve Negron. who contested this seat in 2018, will be her opponent in the general after beating military nurse Lynne Blankenbeker for the nomination. He previously served in the State Legislature where he was considered a reliably conservative vote on a range of issues. The district voted for Clinton in 2016, backed Kuster in 2018, but it is expected to be close again, especially if Trump can turn out supporters in the more rural regions who stayed home last time.

Because he and the rest of the left take away the moral high ground and their sense of self-righteousness. They get off on feeling morally and intellectually superior to other people simply by virtue of the fact that they vote for Democrats, the "good" team, and we make it clear that a lot of the politicians that they fawn over are actually terrible people who harm poor and working people in the same way that Republicans do and that having a D next to your name isn't good enough. 

That or they've gone off the deep end and think he and the generation of young people that he inspired are Russian spies. 

But don't worry. No one on the left expected to win this race. It was an extreme long-shot from the beginning. We've won a whole host of victories against establishment Dems over the last couple of months, and there are currently 8 conservative Dem incumbents losing their races against leftist challengers in Rhode Island right now:

Read before you comment. Also, I cannot possibly analyze every single downballot race in the time that I have available to do these things, but you're free to do so if it's that important to you

Some of y'all act like I personally decide who wins each race. It's a fact that the Sanders-endorsed candidate for governor lost, while Trump-backed candidates in the Senate and CD1 races advanced. I can't change the results because three GGD users don't like them
