GenericPhag 143
It was a great performance, but it's super rare that a performance becomes a big cultural moment. I think she could have done more or gone more avant-garde, but we can't expect that every time or for every performance to this massive "moment". Most big performers have 1-4 performances that became big culturally, more if you're someone like MJ or Madonna. Gaga already has Paparazzi at the VMAs, Shallow at the Oscars, the Superbowl Halftime show, Born This Way at the Grammys, and arguably her SOM medley at the Oscars. That's already more than enough, can we stop placing our expectations so high it's genuinely unfair to Gaga?

And she did it so well her performances used to always be thought provoking in that they had some strange element to be interpreted rather than a standard choreo performance This I agree with. What happens is people (artists, and people as in GP) lose interest over time, I do not think Gaga’s main focus is being the #1 popstar anymore, or maybe she may want to be but isn’t willing to put as much effort as she’s established now. What everyone needs to understand is these artists make it in the industry at a young age hungry for fame and acclaim and at some point it starts to wear them out and the goddess we fell in love with turns into a different artist (this is the closest we’ve been to late 2000s Gaga tho I will say but you can tell her performances don’t have as much thought (or maybe even effort)). The performance was nice, but average, I undestand what you mean. And I simply feel like she doesn’t care as much as stans do, not anymore because she did care a LOT back in 2008-2011. I largely agree with this. I don’t think it’s completely because she’s worn out or not hungry anymore, I think deep down she wants to be regarded more like Adele than 2009-2013 Gaga now. starcell 440
The green screen honestly exceeded my expectations, I was honestly expecting some garbage looking **** so I was personally impressed. With all the limitations going on, and the fact she probably had to re plan the entire trajectory of how Chromatica is being promoted (since Covid first ****ed things up, and then BLM put a halt to things), I thought it was pretty good. So many things had to be cancelled, rescheduled, replanned to accommodate pandemic restrictions, and maybe more we aren’t aware of, who freaking knows really. Yes, she might have had months to plan for this, but to be honest, we didn’t really know how bad covid was gonna get back in February, so replanning the VMAs all together might not have happened until I dunno; April? I mean, they didn’t even have her mask made until I think two weeks before recording, right? And then all the lockdowns that’s prevented a lot of essential meetings? Just throwing out a random guess. And then you have all her other things planned stacked on top of that. I’m not quite sure it’s fair to say she had more than enough time, when time doesn’t matter if things are being forced to change in uncertain times. Anyways, there was no way she could top Paparazzi, especially at a no audience VMAs. Save a better thing for when people can actually witness it. Fresco 1,688
The performance was great! Staging: she entered the dance floor on a fireman pole through a group of mannequins and played piano on a giant brain. I watched the whole show several times!!! aaronyoji 2,054
the stage was amazing, what even... it was one of the very very few where something physical was actually built and actually engaging during the performance, instead of having a flat screen with with headache inducing graphics and neon signage. she is all about being present and it was a pretty clear concept from start to finish. falling down the hole into the different stages of chromatica, the plastic doll reference, the atmosphere of it all, the brain piano, it was all so classic gaga. Sepsami 18,825
Imagine saying Gaga doesn't rehearse enough even though she literally shows us she takes ice baths to prepare for shows like the VMAs I'm grateful we got the amazing performance we got, The GP loves it, it has by far the highest views of all the performances (except BTS obvi). She showed me she's serious about making Chromatica a successful era, and that's all I wanted.

Ivy 12,485
I respect your opinion, but I have to say that I enjoyed it so much. To me she put in so much work to give us a little bit of everything.. from the stage set up, the beginning part with all the little details in the room, the outfits/costumes, the piano part, the dancing, to performing the first 3 singles () and I really loved it. I might change a little of the choreo tho, to make it easier for her to sing while doing it. I know we tend to be nitpicky as fans because we notice everything, but maybe you could try watching a few more times and see how you feel you might find that you enjoy it more the meow in zombieboy
MOT 3,020
I know zip about actually putting on a show like the VMA's, but I'm trying to imagine in my head on the one hand doing a normal VMA's and on the other hand doing a show in the circumstances in which all the performers found themselves last week. For a normal show, all the resources are fixed in one place and everyone is free to come and go and do whatever they please. Last week, resources were presumably thinly spread, and people were not free to do just as they pleased in terms of where they went and who they were with. There was no audience either which might suck the life out of things a bit. Think about the superbowl as well. You have a readymade giant stage and 70000 people in situ, and you have the full might of all the superbowl media technology at your disposal. Last Sunday would have been amateur hour by comparison in terms of available resources. I would say Gaga and her crew did the best they could, and I really enjoyed the performance. I thought they did a great job. I send my love as always to the warrior queen, and I wish her well in her battles with her physical and mental health issues. Sneaky Oliver 22,067
I think the apartment, VMA 99 throwback and the travel to another planet concept are very Gaga-esque. Some of you guys are too harsh on her. If you look back, this year’s performance was more complex than You and I and maybe even Applause. There were huge props, outfit changes, acoustic set.
