Ceres is an 'ocean world' with sea water beneath surface, mission finds

The dwarf planet Ceres – long believed to be a barren space rock – is an ocean world with reservoirs of sea water beneath its surface, the results of a major exploration mission show.

Ceres is the largest object in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, massive enough to be shaped by its gravity, enabling the Nasa Dawn spacecraft to capture high-resolution images of its surface.

Now a team of scientists from the United States and Europe have analysed images relayed from the orbiter, captured about 35km from the asteroid.

Using infrared imaging, one team discovered the presence of the compound hydrohalite – a material common in sea ice but which until now had never been observed beyond Earth. 

“We can now say that Ceres is a sort of ocean world, as are some of Saturn’s and Jupiter’s moons.”

While this global ocean beneath the planet's surface likely froze over time, remnants of it may still be present beneath a large impact crater on Ceres.

The presence of salts may have preserved the liquid as a brine, despite cold temperatures.

so in solar system alone, earth, venus used to be too i guess, 2 of saturns moons and now ceres have water. damn it's common  we are gonna find aliens soon, won't we

Water is common in the Solar System, it's just that most exists as ice

I love when missions shares new information and photos about other planets, this is fascinating to me and I always wonder a lot of things, if life exists there, or how would look like standing on it

Europa has Jupiter’s gravitational pull, where the pulling and tugging would keep its insides warm via tidal heating.
