Massive meteorite crater found in Australia thought to be 100M years old

A massive 100 million-year-old meteorite crater has been found while a company was drilling for gold in outback Western Australia.

The impact crater is estimated to have a diameter of about 5km. Although not visible from the surface, experts found the crater using electromagnetic surveys.

Located near the Goldfields mining town of Ora Banda, north-west of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, the crater is believed to be five times bigger than the famous Wolfe Creek crater in the Kimberley (pictured below)

The geologist and geophysicist, Dr Jayson Meyers, said the find was significant and unexpected.

“This discovery was made in an area where the landscape is very flat. You wouldn’t know it was there because the crater has been filled in over geological time,” he said.

100 million years ago Australia was still attached to Antarctica and in the South Pole. This discovery is so cool! This is only the beginning, there is so much more to discover!

It’s subsurface so wouldn’t have been found without the correct tech.

Lmao not even close. We have visual maps of the surface of pretty much the entire planet cuz of satellites... 

 

But beneath the surface of what can be easily visually seen the vast majority remains unexplored. Why do u think companies for natural resources like oil, natural gas, precious metals etc have to explore to find more reserves? Even knowing what to look for and what geological areas are most likely to contain reserves they gotta explore because most of earth beneath the surface is unexplored

 

And even on the surface satellites haven't necessarily been used to zoom in detail/high resolution for every square foot of the planet (if u go to things like Google Earth for example although u can see the entire planet huge chuncks of the planet have not been zoomed in and just exist as a blur) so even on surface some things could still yet be discovered

 

Don't take our planet for granted. There's a lot we still don't know about it

Forsure thinking about it Earth contains 71% of water. We have to only know about 20% of what goes on underwater.

And especially on the really deep pitch black areas that we only send special subs to once in a while. Imagine all the undiscovered species still

It’s gets really interesting when you do the research and watch YouTube videos on it. There’s some wild species when you discover what’s living down there.
