People can even choose the candidate and almost anyone can run without any qualifications The average person does not really know enough about society and economy to pick good candidates and ppl shouldn't be given that responsibility. To make matters worse it's not a level playing field in America since the rich can buy their way to the top In most countries u still vote for parties and hold Government accountable so it's still democratic... But when parties pick their own leader for example it ensures someone competent (or at least more competent than some people u get in the US) get the nomination not just someone who is a celebrity or knows how to play to the crowd I know here in Canada no party (even the most conservative) would ever pick someone like Trump as their leader to represent them The US has a level of democracy that's too high in my opinion that people aren't mature enough for.
