Every artist says that and it can be true to some degree, but when their work is trashed by the critics they all are affected. All of them. It's like your baby getting insulted

I don't think every artists does, there are a lot bands, rock artists really don't give a damn about reviews. They jive in their own tunes.

It almost seems like artists today are expected to experiment with genres and sounds, but if Katy's fine with having a similar sound across all her albums, then more power to her. I'm not criticizing, she can do whatever she wants, but why choosing to enrage herself by some critics at a moment like that?

There a thousands of artists who release album after album of the same style of music and don't get criticised for not "evolving", only because they're not a female pop star

I'm not saying it's necessary. I'm just replying to the user who was wondering why critics were praising Gaga for going back to her roots.

I think the demand that artists “evolve” is sort of ridiculous. You love an artist because you love their music/sound. I dislike it when an artist I love suddenly goes in another direction that I don’t like. But see it’s all personal taste! I’m glad that they’re following their muse and making music they want it isn’t all for me. So if i don’t like it as much oh well. But the reverse is also true. If an artist just loves her own sound and stays in that direction why can’t she?  And the fans who loved that sound can continue to love it, or not, as they choose. But not every artist MUST change to be serious. Maybe they’re good at what they do and they love their original sound and there’s nothing wrong with that. I like Katy’s sound so I’m glad she’s not embracing metal or whatever. Haha.
