Of course you can pick a line out of all of comments here. How about the rest of everything I said? 2 hours ago, FfFfFfFF said: The simple measure of keeping universities closed (at least some that don't require lab or face-to-face work and at least for half a year) would help so much. People are selfish for waiting them open at all cost. I don't know how is it in the rest of Europe but where I live looks like they will indeed open and most surveys show people voting for that & that inherentely puts me at risk. It annoys me so much. I know this is impractical for many fields and decisions should be specific them. People of universities that don't require lab or face-to-face work should not be so quick to go against all the risks. If not for them for the people that are possibility infecting. Be optimistic! Unless we will have 50% of people becoming immune to the virus by then then it won't stop. As of now we can assume 40% already had it (theoretically as it's too big of a number to actually be the case). That leaves 60% of the population exposed. For the next year the vast majority of us will still be vulnerable. A couple thousands or even millions of infections this summer won't make much difference. Sorry, I am tired and an asshole . Didnt read the whole topic My university moved all of the lectures online but kept all the practicals face-to-face. So it is kind of happening the way you suggested. At least in the UK, not really sure how it's like in other countries.

That does not mean that current number is insignificant. Scientists here say that 20-40x more people are infected than diagnosed, so they assume some regions will be safe this winter. True, not all will be without new outbreaks, but every place with more immune people will hold better.

If we multiply them by 40 which is a generous estimation we get 800M people out of 7.7 Billion.. this isn't close to herd immunity unfortunately. Because corona is not spread equally (eg in US that 40x would be enough), and countries like China fake results. True, there will be new countries that probably won't handle situations successfully, but let's just hope that this summer outbreak helps areas with currently bad situation. :))

I don't see why summer cases would help when the vast majority of the world is still vulnerable and not close to herd immunity. In the long run they may help but cases will keep growing and growing. Most people didn't had COVID so in any given situation if they are exposed to it they will get it. On the contrary, if the majority of people had it (which is not the case), then the virus would slow down - basically the essence of herd immunity. Plus, I don't understand your point as no one says that people should stop getting educated. You can take classes online and graduate just like you did before.. like People should be granted the acces to internet and many countries are already proposing to give laptops to the children that don't have acces to internet.. however my point was about universities. Wouldn't make sense to protect especially the areas where people don't have the acces to healthcare? I described why it's a difficult thing to decide. It's either no access to good healthcare, or no access to good healthcare+education. This laptop deal honestly seems great, but internet still isn't there for the classes to be had. Also, many many countries don't have this kind of capabilities or policies to begin with. You seem to have a very privileged point of view. And even if everyone had access to the internet, it isn't fair to charge the same absurd amounts for a very very subpar higher education. I am living in it (as I have been since March), and it sucks. Free online courses with no certifications are better at this point, since they were designed to be online, unlike the makeshift classes universities have been offering and the completely out-of-touch assignments they have been giving their students since this all started. To me, I believe a mixed system would be the best option. Optional presential classes that are also being streamed for the ones who can't/don't want to risk their health. This way, at least the insane tuition would make sense, since they'd still be providing the services that were included when these courses were initially designed. One thing is going online as an emergency for lack of options, another one is going online by design and still charge the same amount for it. And honestly, I don't see how wanting to get a good education, or not wanting to be scammed by your institution, is a selfish thing. Many people can't afford to postpone their lives because this might be the only chance they have in life for having a future. There's ways of doing these things, even during a pandemic. They say for my country which is in Central Europe that this winter will be better, so I assume the same goes for countries with similar situations. Since when do people want to go back to school/university/etc. I do Of course not with this pandemic going on, but I’m awaiting the moment it’s safe to go back to uni because it’s just not the same to receive classes online. And as a med student I will have to return soon because I have laboratory classes and those just can’t be online. I’ve put those classes off but this next trimester I have to take them.
