I get what he's saying. In his prime, nearly all of the bands/performers wrote everything. For Elton, he wrote the music and melodies, Taupin the lyrics. Simple as that. You knew who was behind the talent (or, alternatively, not behind it!).

Now, it's more a cult of personality that pushes sales/radio/streaming.

That said, I think the reason he and Gaga get along is that she doesn't need 1,000 producers. She could easily do what Elton did/does. She merely chooses to team up. Which is different than an "artist" who HAS to team up.

I disagree, I get his point but Aretha Franklin never wrote her songs and Elvis Presley never did but that doesn’t mean they are lesser musicians. It used to be we only appreciated an artist for just their voice but now we are requiring them to dance,write, produce, do acrobats while looking perfect. The expectations keep getting higher and it’s no wonder so many musicians burn out.

I respect a lot Elton as an artist, but I never really liked him as a person. He always had that problematic self-centered personality that I never appreciated.
