Entertainment Weekly - positive (67/100)

Slant Magazine - mixed (60/100)
Rather than build on any of the sounds she experimented with in the past, Perry seems content to stay in her lane when, at this point, she has nothing to lose.

The Telegraph - mixed (60/100)
You don’t come to Katy Perry for depth. What’s made her special in the past is that lightning jolt of emotion that rushes through the layers of sugary-sweet pop

RS - mixed (60/100)

Not counted yet:

The Independent - mixed (3/5)

While ‘Never Really Over’ is Perry’s most compelling single since ‘Dark Horse’, there’s nothing on this record to equal the giddy delight of her greatest hits.

The imagery crayoned through Katy Perry’s sweetly forgettable fifth album, Smile, comes straight out of the primary school colouring book. Musically as well as lyrically, the whole record blu-tacs itself firmly to bright’n’boring basics.

So they’re basically saying it’s just another Katy Perry album, and that we’ll already know what it sounds like?

Katy should release a Greatest Hits album ready for Christmas, with a bonus ACOUSTIC track about being new mum. Enough with the cartoons, Kathryn. You are more than ready to evolve.

She really needs to evolve. I heard the album and I couldn't help but feel like skipping most of the songs because it felt like I've already heard it. NRO, OL and NTEOTW are the only standouts. I love Katy but she has to bring something new to the table.

Love it when you call me legs, in the morning buy me eggs 🥚

It's still her highest rated album so far. :huntyga:

I actually expected it to be better received as pop albums get higher scores nowadays but even so, this is still something.

The fact that this makes it her highest rated album, and 17 points above her lowest rated... :deadbanana:

I haven't listened yet and I'm going in with low expectations. I don't know why she's been clowning around (no pun intended) ever since Witness. Like Girl you are Mother of Bops, songs like Small Talk, Daises and Smile are just not it. If you wanna play it safe, go back to producing with Max Martin. Otherwise her half-assed attempt at Pop hits won't cut it. I say this as someone who loves her. Teenage Dream and Prism mean so much to me. It's sad how she's not innovating sonically at all while all her peers did at some point.

It's less good than Witness imo. Overall, I think it's a very bland album... I do enjoy Champagne Problems, NRO and Teary Eyes though. But most tracks are forgettable.

This will be a streaming disaster.

When album leaked I only listened to Not The End Of The World, cause it's the only song I like since she was teasing on Smile Sundays and I think it's the best on the album, a saviour.
