Yes. Gaga is respected among fans of rock music, heavy metal, rap, classic music, etc since she's not seen as a bland, basic, prefabricated popstar. Also she's educated in music culture, she's a pianist (not the same as just playing the piano) and she creates her own music.

yes the 2000s were a very bland time for music before she came on the scene, it was all about hip-hop and lip synching, there was no element of showbusiness anymore and she changed all that

I put "modern times" in thread's title just in case Madonna / Bowie got mentioned :ohwell:

I don't deny their influence, since ironically it was apparent all over Gaga when she debuted.

I mean, it’s not like Madonna is not modern, though. The 80s were really not that long ago! :triggered:

If anything, I think Madonna definitely invented the figure of the conceptual pop star/artist for women, but Gaga brought it back into the mainstream. Since Madonna in the late 80s/early 90s, I don’t think an artist was able to reach that level of success and cultural impact until Gaga. Still, I’m not sure I’d say Gaga raised the bar, but she for sure reached it (which I don’t think anyone else has).

The answer is yes but @Rino lets not shade Nicki in the poll, because Nicki has elevated the genre of hip hop while Gaga elevated pop music and culture.

Gaga emphasized on a previous established formula by Madonna, Michael Jackson and Bowie, where a pop singer is more than just voice, beauty or body but a whole package of performance art, show business, fashion, visuals, provocation and message beside the music and lyrics. With time, music got shallower with Britney and Spice Girls and the liked in the late 90s and early 00s but Gaga brought the attention back to what Madonna revolutionized since the 80s regarding what a pop star looks like and what she can do and how to put on a show.

Before Gaga I feel like the main archetype of the pop star most prominent in the global mainstream culture was Britney Spears, who was viewed as "manufactured", "inauthentic", "talentless", etc.

While Gaga was also viewed as a manufactured pop star during her prime (2008-2011), her presence sparked multiple conversations analyzing her craft and generally people were quite aware that she was the guiding hand behind many of her creations

She made albums with a concept, gave meanings to her songs, music videos, performances, etc.

I feel like Gaga put the "art" back into the "pop artist", which was lost for a time somewhere around 90's-00's

Yes. Before her debut, I only see pop music as something you listen/dance to and that's it (early 2000s).

But when Gaga came, I became intrigued to what the singer looked like, the album/single cover art, the concept, how is it performed live, etc. Yeah, she showed the maximum potential of Pop.

Experiencing this in real time was absolutely *un*real. She was truly a phenomena unlike anything I had seen in my life and made me excited about a genre I had characterized as vapid and artificial. Lady Gaga's emergence onto the pop scene broadened my perspective about what was possible in fashion, pop culture, theatre/performance art, society...I honestly wouldn't be the person that I am today if Lady Gaga hadn't arrived how and when she did.
