Before Gaga I feel like the main archetype of the pop star most prominent in the global mainstream culture was Britney Spears, who was viewed as "manufactured", "inauthentic", "talentless", etc.

While Gaga was also viewed as a manufactured pop star during her prime (2008-2011), her presence sparked multiple conversations analyzing her craft and generally people were quite aware that she was the guiding hand behind many of her creations

She made albums with a concept, gave meanings to her songs, music videos, performances, etc.

I feel like Gaga put the "art" back into the "pop artist", which was lost for a time somewhere around 90's-00's

I feel like she had a fire and a drive that incumbent popstars lacked at that moment in time.

Beyoncé, Britney, Xtina and then Rihanna were already established in the industry, it was fun to see a popstar that broke the rules of music and fashion. Everybody looked basic next to her so they had to keep up. She quickly became the standard and the bar was sooo high!

It actually started the moment Max Martin stepped into the US market and the hits machine started to give real money, in 1996 witth BSB's Quit Playing Games (With My Heart).

But the 90s were weird, it was the dominated by boy/girl bands but also by alternative and punk, so it was a weird mix, also a lot of Danish and Swedish artists were dominating the charts.. and of course the summers songs like macarena and barbie girl..

The 00s were more like that you said, they started to build the blond singers like Britney and Xtina.

Of course Gaga did. Everyone was complacent before she came along and then they had to step up their tired old game and run to catch up with her. It was invigorating. Thank You Lady Gaga. :applause::legend:

Ummm...

1. Yes Gaga elevated it

2. Britney was not “talentless”:bear: manufactured? Maybe I guess, but her whole persona was being the blond haired teen heartthrob that captivated America. She was an amazing dancer and dominated the pop scene and then coupled with the “sexy” persona she did with risqué music videos like Oops and Hit Me Baby One more time she was loved by pretty much everyone. I personally would hardly say she was necessarily hated for being unauthentic

3. Why is Nicki Minaj in the poll:bear:

Just now, Franz Ferdinand said:

Fvck Madonna’s drag, right?

I put "modern times" in thread's title just in case Madonna / Bowie got mentioned :ohwell:

I don't deny their influence, since ironically it was apparent all over Gaga when she debuted.
