i still don't know where GUY went wrong. it fit with what was popular at the time, it was catchy, great video.

i think it really was just anti-Gaga hate, if she released it today, Top 5 for sure.

Gaga did no promo for the song, it came after 3 months of blackout, DWUW killed ARTPOP's chances of another success, everyone was super anti-gaga, gaga was not in a good mental state etc

People were oversaturated with "Lady Gaga" content at that point. She made the right call by going full-on jazz and acoustic with C2C, Joanne and ASIB.

Exactly. She went to Shadow to come back stronger.

And Katy Perry, which is post ARTPOP era right now, can't understand that:selena:

most fans still believe heavy metal lover and bloody mary could've been huge :bear:

HML and Bloody Mary would've been unmitigated disasters, i agree

but this was already way after Billboard updated its streaming/YouTube metrics, which is when radio became less important.

For example, this was the same time that Thrift Shop, Talk Dirty, Stay High, Rap God, Holy Grail, Get Lucky, Started From the Bottom, etc. all peaked in the Top 10.

it surely wasn't just "not being radio friendly" (the importance of which a lot of stans on this site inflate), or even really the song itself. i think really was simply a larger backlash against Gaga. anything she would've released would've underperformed imo, regardless of how good it was

Bloody Mary could have been in a world where everyone has impecable taste but that's not here nor there

On a lighter note, I follow a Vaporwave Aesthetics reddit page, lol, and someone had posted a photo of Hearst Castle. I was happy that a few people commented that Gaga had filmed a video there.

Interscope refused to fund another single and wanted her to move on, the song was never TECHNICALLY an official single (no single iTunes release via Interscope and on Spotify for example) Gaga self funded the music video with the condition that if she could film at Hearst she would head an anti-drought campaign at the time, she booked all the radio appearances and tv appearances herself hence why they were all in New York at the time and she had no radio deals or anything to help it.

We’re lucky it even charted tbh.

I was so done with the ARTPOP era that I didn't even bother placing a bet, apparently

If you see me posting like crazy, I'm either bored or procrastinating.

This. Only this.

You guys are too obsessed with DWUW. The song probably played a 1% part of GUY's flop, but that's it. The DWUW controversy wasn't that big, ever, even at its peak last year

This info is NEVER discussed and is 100% why the song flopped if true. Yes, Billboard had begun measuring streams; that's how Dope peaked #8 via YT streams of her Yahoo! performance. However, even w/ Radio playing the least important role it ever has, this year was dominated by a core group of songs from late 19/early 20 that were nearly nonexistent on other platforms (Blinding Lights, DSN, Circles, Memories, Intentions, Say So), but massive Airplay AI.

G.U.Y.  basically had the same release as Til It Happens To You + MV. The views of the G.U.Y. debut were astronomical and that it charted without an assist from low AI on Radio + iTunes sales is actually incredible. This was NOT a flop. It overperformed as a promo single released far after the era lost steam, without support on major platforms.

The narrative of ARTPOP being a flop era is so dismissive of the circumstances surrounding each single. Applause leaked and was up against some of the decade's biggest pop releases, yet had an incredible run on Radio, positive reviews, and #4 peak. DWUW smashed WW and was held back in the UK / US by being released as a promo single (think if the high debuts of songs this year were released only on iTunes without Radio / MV / physical sales; they'd never make up that ground). It still was an acclaimed top 10 on US Pop Radio and could've peaked in the BB100 Top 10 w/ an MV. Dope peaked #8 from streams alone. G.U.Y. was released ~6 months after DWUW in a new season without promo beyond the MV. Hardly a flop era, just a sloppy one.

BTW had similar issues: Judas released w/ only 3 days of tracking, Edge of Glory released as a promo single. Her hype was so monstrous then, though, that Judas still debuted #10 / EOG #3, so they aren't considered huge "flops." But, both would've been #1 songs w/ a full week + proper rollout (EOG certainly).

Proper Rollout
Applause [VMAs] > DWUW [Album Release] > Gypsy [Grammys] > Final Single [Roseland]

Had DWUW been sent Radios + promo + MV, it would've debuted Top 5 w/ multiple wks Top 10. Gypsy would've done extremely well as a 3rd single in time for a Grammy performance, with potential for an epic MV. And, she performed a highly acclaimed residency to close out the Roseland Ballroom in spring 2014, where she could've incorporated a final single (G.U.Y. or Sexxx Dreams with a later remix) or new lead off Act II (Brooklyn Nights would've fit the theme perfectly).

1. Applause (08/13; VMA performance) = #4
2. DWUW (10/13; full and proper rollout; Xtina remix) = #3
3. Gypsy (01/14; Grammy performance) = #5
4. G.U.Y. / Sexxx Dreams / Brooklyn Nights (05/14; supported by Roseland Ballroom Residency) = #10
