 Appreciation thread: Tori Amos

little-earthquakes-banner.jpg?v=1

I'm planning on making a little series of appreciation threads for music legends I recently discovered that deserve more recognition on this forum. You won't see well known queens who get the love and praise they deserve, but rather overlooked music legends/icons that are rarely mentioned on here.

This time I want to share some light on a 90s alternative music-icon: Tori Amos

ABOUT TORI AMOS

Tori Amos is an American singer-songwriter and professional pianist. She is classically trained and has been playing piano at a very young age. She's also a unique songwriter and isn't afraid to speak her mind about sexuality, politics and feminism. Her first solo album Little Earthquakes was a big success and became a must-hear classic for all music lovers. It got rave reviews and is often named as one of the best albums of all time. The start of a legendary career!

PERSONAL EXPERIENCE

I discovered Tori Amos this year and I'm in love:giveup: Her voice is gorgeous and her albums are fantastic. She has a massive discography so I'm still taking everything in, but I'm listening to her several times a week now. She's already becoming one of my favorite artists of all time and one of my most played this year! It's impossible to rank her albums and songs yet, but albums like Little Earthquakes, Boys For Pele, The Beekeeper, From the Choir Girl Hotel, Scarlet's Walk and Unrepentant Geraldines are definitely standouts of me! Boys For Pele being my fav:heart:

ESSENTIALS

Wanna get into Tori Amos? Album-wise you can't go wrong with any of her first three as first experience. Amazing from start to finish!

Since she has so many songs it's hard to pick a few, but these are some of the songs I'd say are essential:

Love her!

In high school one of my friends introduced me to her (I had only heard Crucify before and the Professional Widow remix that was popular at the time). She was a big fan and I bought Little Earthquakes and fell in love with that album. I must say I haven't kept track of her lately but I often listen to her albums. Y Kant Tori Read is a current guilty pleasure.

I saw her in concert in 2005 and in 2007. That American Doll Posse show was my fav cause that night she was Pip and I love her more raw rocky side.

That year I got to film an interview with her. I operated the camera and my colleague (a huuuge fan) did the interview. It was orginally supposed to be 10 min. We had to wait for hours and feared we would only get 5 min or nothing at all. Finally we got up to the hotel room, Tori was so sweet, immediately commented on my Bambi necklace and told us to get comfy and have some cookies while they touched up her makeup. I set up the little camera and her mic.

That 5 min interview turned into an hour long conversation. I joined in at some point too and we had so much fun. She literally said: I could talk to these 2 all day! :kara:

Part of the interview:

I rarely get to tell this story cause many people don't know her sadly. Her music videos alone are legendary.

According to Gaga I'm a ****ing rad bitch

God I love Tori. Literally one of my favorite musicians of all time. She is from North Carolina, like me. Her voice is perfection, her lyrics are poetry, and her skills on the piano are so advanced. She really understands the art of melody and the beauty of music. I always listen to her a lot in the Fall- her music sounds like Autumn to me. So yes, it's almost Tori Season.

My favorites of hers:

"Silent All These Years, Hey Jupiter(Dakota Remix), Sugar,Honey, Father Lucifer, Cornflake Girl, A Sorta Fairytale, China, Northern Lad, Her version of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow", Wednesday, Her version of "I don't like Mondays", Bliss, Oceans, Dragon, Maryanne, Spark, Pretty much anything from "Choir Girl Hotel" album. I know i'm forgetting more. There is a special place in my heart for Tori.

Omg love this story!! Thanks for sharing! It's a shame you don't get to tell it more because she's so underrated. I didn't know her either until Apple Music suggested her because I was listening to Fiona Apple a lot and it was love at first hearing. She seems like such a sweet person too!

(btw I'm Dutch too:ally:)

YES to everything you said!:diane: I couldn't agree more. Also that her music is very Fall-like. Also Winter-like imo. I discovered her this year in the early Spring so can't wait to listen to her music when it's getting colder:flutter:

Thier music is not sonically very similar, but they both write incredible yet quirky lyrics, both have very similar styles and mannerisms, both make super unique music videos, and are both CRIMINALLY underrated. I’ve always kind of associated the two with one another, I love them both!
