Morrisons to remove plastic bags for life and trial paper alternative

Morrisons is planning to ditch all its plastic “bags for life” following evidence that they are being used once and thrown away. The food retailer is running a trial in eight stores from Monday, which will see sturdy paper bags offered at checkouts instead.

If the trial is popular, introducing paper bags only across all its 494 stores would save 90m plastic bags being used annually, the equivalent of 3,510 tonnes of plastic per year, the company said.

I moved to my area last July and my local Morrisons has only ever had these paper bags.

I'm all for removing plastics, and the initiative of the plastic bag charge has definitely been effective. But paper bags are no use in the weather we have over here. A lot of people have been reusing their bags after the charge was brought in, which is great. You can even recycle them. They need to come up with a better method than paper bags... like have them made out of a material or something. Or keep the thicker bags for life, but charge slightly more... idk. But paper bags are just not pratical in the UK. 

And they aren't even that strong. To carry a heavy shop, the bags might not hold up.

Each paper bag can carry up to 16kg and is also water resistant
