How disgusting. It's not only about Greece. The way the world is still not handling this immigration issues in a civilized way...

Honestly, I might be biased as Greece is my own country, but really, the economy is horrible. We really can't hold more migrants, as many people are already very broke and some are homeless. Migrants will only make the situation worse. We're currently going through a second economic crisis in the span of 10 years because of the pandemic.

That said, I don't think that's a solid reason to leave them in the middle of the sea. The rest of Europe should take action in this situation.

I think covid is a cause. I have read that there are a lot of new cases in Greece, so it's not safe for migrants. Also they could be infected too, making the situation worse

Cases are constantly going up, reaching numbers we hadn't had since March. However, I don't think that's the case. I believe the whole reason is economical. We're a small country with bad economy, quite a bit of coronavirus and all. It's just not ideal.

Again, that's still not a valid reason to leave the migrants in the middle of the sea. Not that we MUST accept them into the country, but rather find another place for them. Europe, Turkey. So many options available.

I agree with you. However, believe me. Turkey has more than 7 million Syrians. Dont believe those saying its 4 million. Istanbul alone has that much. and Greece has more than it can handle too.

Turkey has a really bad economy too.

Its time for Europe to help.

Europe only knows how to point fingers at the southern countries. In Greece the last 10 years people are really tested hard by government cruelties. When the refugee crisis started people even though they were crippled financially by the harsh economic measures token , they voluntarily helped as many people as they could:

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.aljazeera.com/amp/indepth/features/2016/08/greece-fishermen-lesbos-saving-refugee-lives-160804091028172.html

Instead of taking action early on and support greek people educating them , politicians took advantage and used the refugees as an excuse to take money from European financial programs, money that never saw the light of day because either they were used for other personal "interests" or they were blatantly used to secure houses for refugees whilst they were taking Greek people's houses due to debts.  Can you imagine the toxicity of these decisions?

Last year government has changed to "right" democrats. This government cut loose all the asylum seekers, trapped refugees into their camps, gave orders to police to stop all the refugee waves and detent them, spent money to silence the matter in the media & to top that is in constant turbulence with Turkey. Like... They speak of war as if it were a toy. It's a matter of time we as Greek people become refugees from a war that nobody asked for.

When will xenophobia finally considered unacceptable on GGD ? Seriously I can't read any thread without being systematically disgusted by some users words.

At least 1,072 migrants were sailed to the edge of Greece’s water territory on inflatable life rafts and abandoned by Greek authorities, The New York Times reported.

The Times analysed evidence from multiple sources, including academic researchers, the Turkish Coast Guard, and independent watchdogs groups. They found that there were at least 31 different incidents of these expulsions in the past few months.

Najma al-Khatib, a 50-year-old Syrian teacher told The Times that on July 26, she and 22 others including babies were taken by masked Greek officials from a detention centre on the island of Rhodes while it was dark outside. She told The Times they were left on a “rudderless, motorless life raft” and were later rescued by the Turkish Coast Guard.

“I left Syria for fear of bombing — but when this happened, I wished I’d died under a bomb,” she told The Times.

"These pushbacks are totally illegal in all their aspects, in international law and in European law," François Crépeau, former United Nations special rapporteur on the human rights of migrants and professor of law at the Faculty of Law at McGill University, told The Times.

Greece has denied that they've done anything illegal.
