Apple pulls Fortnite from App Store

Sunny

The question about Apple's taxes and how the App Store functions was the topic of the recent antitrust hearing. The EU is also launching antitrust probes into the App Store.Ā

Epic will probably win this fight, Apple will get hate from the fans and the public, which mainly plays Fortnite :/Ā

You guys don't even realize. Why do you think song singles on iTunes went from 99cents to 1.29? It's for the same reason Fortnite is saying FU to Apple now. We are the ones being taxed not Fortnite.Ā

I can't believe people are on Apple's side of this.Ā

I mean, both Apple and Epic Games are just after money in the end.

I think what Epic Games is hoping that this will blow up in Apple's face and the public falloutĀ over the removal of the game from the App Store will make AppleĀ soften their policies. It won't.Ā :bear:

Sooo why exactly is Epic pissed?

They are using the app store, owned by apple. The rules are in place for everyone without exceptions.

They did something against these rules and areĀ surprised?Ā :ladyhaha:

Ā

+ it seems like a stunt, how can they have a video pretty much ready as response already?

That's exactly the issue. The app store is the only entry point to touch the millions of iOS user and on top of that you have only one way to process in-app purchases with a whooping 30% tax from Apple.

Apple is in a position of monopoly and abuse it as the company also distributes apps on the store.

Spotify also called out Apple on that. They have to give 30% to Apple and compete against Apple Music who also has to give 30% to... itself. It's very problematic when it comes to fair competition.

I won't go deeper on Apple and the app stores because it's been YEARS of abusive actions from Apple toward independent developpers or bigger corporation (going from abusive bans to technology stealing)

Well They never had their app on Android I guess because of the same reason, so it was about time that they get tired of sharing profits with AppleĀ

None of the sides are to be with since both want the moneyĀ

It should be noted that the difference is that on Android, you can still download and install apps (without any root or jailbreak) even if it's not on the Play Store. Also the Play Store isn't the only app store on Android :)

Ā

Yeah thatā€™s right, they have more options to evade the play store fees but on iOS thereā€™s none.Ā
Iā€™m curious on how much of their active users play from iOS devices, that will give us a real picture on how much this could affect both sidesĀ

That's not true. I download Fortnite on the Play store. You can't download it on a Chromebook, if that's what you mean because it's not compatible with ChromeOS.

I think it has a lot to do with the antitrust investigation involving Apple in Congress

Without exceptions? Are you sure? I believe Apple is currently under investigation for antitrust, partially to do with cutting special deals with Amazon. That sounds like an exception to me.Ā

There's a bigger issue here, if Apple allowed Fortnite to proceed to break the rules the rest of the app developers would follow, or sue if they were treated differently

Epic is pissed because, in order to have an app on the app store, you need to give 30% of every in app purchase, and you can't mention the fact that you can buy, for example, V-bucks the fortnite money on the fortnite website for less.Ā

This still sounds like Epic was in the wrong.

You think Epic is in the wrong because it isn't allowed to have its own payment processing?

Yeah, it hurts Apple's income but whether or not they enforced their rules is going toĀ make them lose that money regardless because people are going to go with the cheaper option for the same amount which Apple gets none of.Ā

Apple can afford to take a hit but I'm curious how this will play out for Fortnite cause even if it wins the lawsuit this can be dragged out

Yes. Keep in mind I dont like Epic at all (severely overworked employees underpaid for the hours they put in, shoddy practices to pull business fromĀ competitors, etc). But it is Apple's platform and they have to right to enforce their policies.
