8/11 Primary Results

JRCF29

Connecticut

Joe Biden has won the Presidential Primary in Connecticut, the final stop on the path to the DNC. With about 80% of the vote, Biden is poised to pick up all 60 delegates the state has on offer.

Georgia

Rep. Doug Collins' seat in the 9th District will likely be filled by Andrew Clyde, the winner of the GOP primary in a decidedly scarlet portion of the country. He defeated State Sen. Matt Gurtler who has ties to white supremacy movements.

Across the state, in the 14th District, Marjorie Greene, a QAnon supporter who has accused Jewish billionaire and holocaust survivor George Soros of being a Nazi amid other racist and antisemitic statements, won 40,000+ votes and is poised to steamroll her poorly funded and little-known Democratic opponent in November.

Minnesota

The Senate race has been made official, with incumbent Tina Smith and former congressman Jason Lewis occupying the Democrat and Republican ballot lines, respectively, come November. A poll today showed a statistical tie in the race but Senator Smith, who succeeded disgraced ex-Senator and comedian Al Franken in the chamber and has taken a much more moderate position on the issues since (according to govtrack), is favored by all major election predictors.

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D) is facing a primary challenge built largely off of two planks: her missed votes in Congress and her criticism of Israel. Lawyer Antone Melton-Meaux outraised the final member of the "Squad" to face a primary opponent and his candidacy has attracted pro-Israel groups who feel Omar is out of step with majorities in both parties on the Jewish state. Still, the race appears headed in Omar's favor thanks, at least in part, to the coalescing of the DFL around her candidacy and the backing of labor groups based in the urban district. As of writing the race just been called, with Rep. Omar leading by double-digits.

Collin Peterson, the House's most prominent Blue Dog Democrat now that Rep. Lipinski (D-IL) has lost renomination, easily defeated two other conservative Democrats and will now likely face former Lt. Governor Michelle Fischbach in the general election. Peterson voted against impeaching the President- unsurprising given that his district is Trump country- in a move that could save his seat in a few months' time; Republicans are gunning for the veteran politician, however, and you can expect heavy spending on both sides.

Wisconsin

In the state's 6th District, lawyer Jessica King has won the Democratic primary and the right to face Rep. Glenn Grothman for the seat in the fall; her chances of picking up the seat are slim, but if any district is going to flip it's this one; Democrats had their strongest showing for the seat in years in 2018 and King is middle-of-the-road enough to peel off some disaffected ex-Trump supporters (assuming they exist in the district's boundaries.)

Republican Derrick Van Orden is currently leading Jessi Ebben in the 3rd District, but it's unlikely that the Minneapolis-adjacent portion of the Badger State will send the military veteran to Congress over incumbent Rep. Ron Kind (D) who holds a seat on the powerful Ways and Means panel.

Vermont

Governor Phil Scott (R) easily won renomination over a slew of more conservative challengers and enters the General as the heavy favorite over Democratic Socialist and Bernie Sanders-affiliated David Zuckerman- the current Lt. Governor. Despite Vermont's reputation as an easy pickup for liberals running for President, Scott is one of the most popular governor's in the country and his social moderation mixed with steadfast fiscal conservatism has won him fans in both parties. He is one of the few Republicans left in power in New England, where the Rockefeller wing of the party once thrived.
