Computers can recognise individual birds - study

Computers can be trained by artificial intelligence to recognise birds on an individual level, a new study has demonstrated.

Researchers collected thousands of labelled images of birds and then used the data to train and test artificial intelligence (AI) models, with the study representing the first successful attempt to do this with birds.

“We show that computers can consistently recognise dozens of individual birds, even though we cannot ourselves tell these individuals apart. In doing so, our study provides the means of overcoming one of the greatest limitations in the study of wild birds – reliably recognising individuals,” said Dr André Ferreira, lead author of the study.

For AI models to be able to accurately identify individuals, they need to be trained with thousands of labelled images. Today human recognition is possible because models have access to millions of pictures of different people that are voluntarily tagged by users. But, acquiring such labelled photographs of animals was not possible before and has created a bottleneck in research.

Being able to distinguish individual animals from each other is essential for the long-term monitoring of populations and protecting species from pressures such as climate change. It is also essential to have access to behaviours that were never described before and understand their evolution and consequences.

Considering China oppresses their people using millions of face-recognition cameras it’s kind of difficult to view this as a sweet story about birds.

I've never really thought about the specific things that could be done with face-recognition.  What are they doing, and where does it lead?

All the uses for technology these days and scientists really have computers out here identifying specific birds 

 

better than them taking over the world I guess (the computers not the birds)

My family talk about this all the time, and about whether we (the west) are leading toward a social credit score system like China, but done under the guise of "stopping hate speech", and slowly but surely changing the definition of hate speech until you can barely say anything outside of a certain narrative. Extra points for praising the government and snitching on others too. Here in UK you can already be arrested if you post certain things on twitter. But who knows, it could go the other ways technology is a beautiful thing , its not the tech that's the problem but the people in control of it
