Artificial Intelligence used to identify prostate cancer with high accuracy

A study published today in The Lancet Digital Health by UPMC and University of Pittsburgh researchers demonstrates the highest accuracy to date in recognizing and characterizing prostate cancer using an artificial intelligence (AI) program. 

“Humans are good at recognizing anomalies, but they have their own biases or past experience,” said senior author Rajiv Dhir, M.D., M.B.A., chief pathologist and vice chair of pathology at UPMC Shadyside.

To train the AI to recognize prostate cancer, Dhir and his colleagues provided images from more than a million parts of stained tissue slides taken from patient biopsies. Each image was labeled by expert pathologists to teach the AI how to discriminate between healthy and abnormal tissue. The algorithm was then tested on a separate set of 1,600 slides taken from 100 consecutive patients seen at UPMC for suspected prostate cancer.

During testing, the AI demonstrated 98% sensitivity and 97% specificity at detecting prostate cancer — significantly higher than previously reported for algorithms working from tissue slides.

wait a minute.... so you could actually have prostate cancer and have a doctor misjudge or miss whether or not you have it? that sucks  i wonder if this is a thing with other cancers

Happened to my step-father. He had kidney cancer and got immune therapy and his condition got worse every day. But the doctors misjudged the situation and kept going. Now it's almost a month since he passed away  .

OT: I'm currently learning to program artificial neural networks ( which basically is AI ) and that's so interesting  . I wonder what technology is able to do next  .

oh my god. do you have a law suit there? my grandma got immunotherapy (alongside chemo). but her immune system began attacking her own liver so they stopped it (but her chemo was helpful). or was that the only option your step dad had because other treatments didn't work?

UPMC's kind of killing with research lately.

It's cool they deployed this for clinical use. A lot of times you just see people talking about the accuracy and not mentioning it's only marginally better, if that, than existing diagnostics. Nope, chemo could've possibly worked, but the doctors were sure it came from the kidney and as this kind of cancer is very hard to cure they were sure the immune therapy was better than chemo.

And no, no lawsuit. First, it wouldn't bring him back and second, it would be so stressful and that's just not what we need in our lives right now.
