Was a-yo really meant to be the next uptown funk?

In her documentary Gaga responds to mark when he tells her to work harder or something and she says that she knows a-yo needs to be the next uptown funk or something like that. Was she just joking and meant it as in that’s what everyone wants from her or was she actually being serious and expected a-yo to be some huge smash? Imo, I think she was just playing cause she didn’t even release a-yo as a single, let alone push it to be the next huge song. A song like a-yo would probably never reach such heights anyways cause the song is kinda clunky and jarring. Thoughts?

I think she was trying to make it a huge smash like Uptown Funk and... yeah :awkney:

Gaga doesn't need to create "the next something", these ideas won't be successful. She doesn't need next Bad Romance, or Poker Face, or Shallow, etc. And I believe Gaga realized it.

I want to say she was joking but I think a part of her actually thought A-Yo was destined to smash considering it was supposed to be the second single. :billie:

Maybe if Mark had produced the song in a similar vein to UF instead of that watered down pop country sound :yennefer:

Before the release of Joanne there was a user here who already listened to the album and said A-Yo was going to be the next "Shake it off".

not "the next" anything but she definitely wanted it to be a single. She performed it plenty of times and deserved to smash

The song is good production, voice etc but the content. Like the lyrics really were lscking for it to beclome a hit.

"Jarring"? I think you got A-Yo and SFA mixed up:ohwell:

To everyone that is or will be saying something about Joanne, A-Yo, and Country music, Gaga has never claimed to be a country singer. She makes pop music that sometimes incorporates americana, sometimes folk, sometimes country.

Country music of today bothers purists like myself not because it's pop country, but because it is pretending to be something other than pop country. Songs by Maren Morris and Sam Hunt, for example, are pop songs with elements of country, not the other way around.

To go back to the Trader Joes thread, food that is 80% Mexican and 20% American influenced can be called Mexican food, but not American food, if that makes sense
