Sorcerer 12,507
Or are artists releasing better work? Lady Gaga only got a 71 Metascore for The Fame and Born This Way, which are her breakthrough albums. She gets her highest score with Chromatica at 79, which is preceded by A Star is Born's 78 score. Taylor Swift's Red, considered by Pitchfork and many fans as her best album, only got a 77 Metascore. Meanwhile, she gets the two highest scores of her career with Lover (79) and the highly acclaimed, folklore (94). Ariana Grande received a 64 for My Everything. Her newer R&B-oriented releases produced 81 for Sweetener and 86 for than u, next, her most acclaimed album yet. Additionally, Selena Gomez got her highest Metascore for Rare (76). Discuss. FfFfFfFF 55,953
Yes. If you follow metacritic, it's easy to see how scores keep getting higher. With pop stars starting to get scores in the 90a, 80+ is no longer that impressive anymore. However one of the most acclaimed singers in history (Bjork) never had a score over 90. TWICE on hatius 4,746
Younger writers. I supposed most of them are more open minded to new sounds and not constantly compare younger artists with the veteran in the past (I'm looking at those OGHs working at slant and NYT who constantly bring up gaga and madonna comparision in their reviews). Please ignore the spelling in username. I am a Beyonce stan afterall.
Taylucifer 5,154
I think a big part of it is people are more open to different styles of music so I think they are more open which I turn has lead to better scores 'The Life of a Showgirl' is out on Oct
Twitter 14
It’s both metacritic and the artists. Metacritic is now more open-minded and respectful to artists that are pop and hip-hop. The artists we all are familiar of grow and evolve. Making better quality music and maturity.
RAMROD 109,604
Why do we to assume they are instead of music quality is getting better so they have no choice but to stan? Beaides, isn't it great that pop music is not seen as low brow anymore? Why is this a problem for you? Guest
I hate the fact that Chromatica and Lover both got a damn 79. Chromatica, to me, is light years ahead of Lover, which is Taylor's absolute worst album. I should become a music critic to fix tragedies such as these. In what way did I say I saw this as a problem?

ArtpopAct2 2,672
Yeah, I think a big part of it is that people are starting to miss pop music as it hasn’t dominated in while Back then it was popular but cool to hate on it, albums like BTW and Teenage Dream absolutely deserved higher scores. Like I’m sorry I love Chromatica but BTW is still Gaga’s best work. Chromatica score is great, BTW deserves high 80s-low 90s. Can’t believe how much I still use that album, and how I manage to put so many people onto its deep cuts.

If they see growth they reward it. Sometimes the album isn’t even a masterpiece but it gets better reviews because of the evolution involved. Also critics seem to retroactively respect artists’ earlier works if the artist has evolved. That’s why when 40th anniversary editions, etc are released they often get wildly better reviews than they did upon initial release.
svn 2
Many critics like to see „depth“ in artists’ work. With pop music, they tend to recognize this only at a later point of the artist‘s career. So in retrospect, they might give Gaga‘s earlier work a higher score.
