Joanne - A Reconstructed Version

:trollga: So Joanne. Probably the most controversial album of this fanbase (a stunning feat after the jazz cover album we got).

But here’s why. Perfect Illusion, John Wayne and Dancin in Circles don’t belong. The rest of the album is personal, unique, and touches on topics of family/friendships/politics/etc.

Perfect Illusion is bland and arguably one of my least favorite Gaga songs. It’s alternative in an uncomfortable way. The production is not fun to listen to. The melody is hard to follow. And I’m not stunned it flopped.

John Wayne is comedic. It almost feels like it is meant to poke fun country music and it’s obsession with folksy men & cowboy aesthetics. And not to mention, it is way too drive by its good production, rather than by Gaga melodies.

And Dancin in Circles is a masturbation bop with some boots tapping. Honestly it reminds me more of Americano than any other Gaga song.

If Joanne had excluded those 3 tracks, insteading including the bonus tracks & maybe another Sinners Prayer esque track, it’d easily have been her “back to the basics” “acclaimed” album everyone calls NFR/folklore/etc.

It’s almost as if she was hesitant about embracing the country-pop sound and felt like she needed upbeat bops to please the fans. It creates an in cohesive sound, something she very clearly made note to avoid on Chromatica (her most cohesive album since TF).

sorry, hard disagree haha.

Perfect Illusion is one of my favorite songs by Gaga. it's absolutely wrenching, like even the lyrics alone. especially hearing the piano version omfg:saladga: plus Kevin Parker's production is so hypnotic.
i do love Tame Impala so I may be biased on this track lol.

John Wayne & Dancin in Circles are classic sexy tongue-in-cheek Gaga. both songs are talking about something deeply personal in an unconventional way. Plus Gaga has a few masturbation songs haha. Joanne would feel incomplete without Gaga's sense of humor.

Born in Chromatica

Funny, because those were my three favourite songs on the album. Perfect Illusion was a great choice for the album and I feel it is very personal for her, in terms of break ups and just life as a Perfect Illusion (though I do agree it wasn’t the best lead single). John Wayne was comedic and not necessary fits the album’s theme, but the music made the album feel more fun and that helped uplift all the other songs on the album for me. As for Dancing On Circles, on an album about family and friendships, that was an interesting choice :stalkga:. But I still like the song.

They brought Bloodpop into production and created songs like A-Yo exactly because of this.

I love the more upbeat songs from Joanne and John Wayne is my favorite one on the tracklist, but I have to agree. If they wanted a personal folk-country inspired record, they should've gone all the way

Honestly, those songs mentioned by the OP are probably the highlights of the album, the rest is meh (except A-YO).

My point us proven. Those songs are constructed as more pop-y fan favorites, whereas the other tracks aren’t. As a result, they weaken the quality of the album. And album that’s about serious family topics doesn’t need a “comedic break”. Chromatica goes all the way on mental health and doesn’t have a random Jewels and Drugs stuck in. Hence why it’s her highest rated album.

I don't think it was supposed to be solely country pop. I think she just took some influences from that genre. Also those songs fit on the album because they are personal and we all know it's her most personal album.

Perfect Illusion isn't just about social media, it's about realising her relationship wasn't perfect after all. She thought it was love but it was an illusion.

John Wayne is about going through that phase after a break up when you want to let your hair down and go wild. John Wayne is the rebound after a relationship.

Dancin' in Circles is not just a masturbation song. It's a way for her to take her mind off her pain. It's healing for her.

These are all personal themes. Perfect Illusion does seem out of place sonically but it's not any less personal than the other songs on the album.

How does the existence of fan favourites prove your point? It just means most people find them better than the rest of the album. Without them the album would only be half of what it is. They don't weaken the quality, it's actually the opposite.

This. It's like they chickened out of committing one way or the other, and it impacted the cohesiveness of the album. All of the songs range from "good" to "great", but they sound like they belong to three diffferent albums. Thematically it tied together but in terms of the production/music in general...not so much. And I like Joanne—it's one of my favorite Gaga albums & I think features some of her strongest lyrics. I actually prefer Joanne a bit more in comparison to Chromatica, but imo Chromatica is a stronger album in some ways due to it being very cohesive.

*I know people have discussed the cohesiveness of Born this Way, but I actually think it managed to mesh several different genres is a fairly cohesive way...partially due to the order of the album so it seems kind of natural when it shifts from one sound to the next.

I don't think that's what they are saying anything about the quality of the songs....PI is one of my favorite songs from Joanne. It's that on Joanne PI, Dancin' in Circles, and John Wayne sound like they belong on one album while Sinner's Prayer, Diamond Heart, and Joanne sound like they belong on a different album.
