bpmMonkey 5,799
I never viewed the production on fun tonight as „frustrating“, but I think in Chromatica lyrics and production are tied together very closely, which makes the record a stand out for me. aaaand, just gonna leave this here

I never felt the need for a drop to begin with, but that’s just me personally. My first time listening I wasn’t focused on the production at all, to be honest, I was just focused on the melody and lyrics. The simplicity of stripping the music back and just saying “I’m not having fun tonight” was impactful enough for me that it left me in awe from the first listen. I also focused on the melody and lyrics on my first listen. And the line "I can see it in your face you don't think I've pulled my weight" part was so heartbreaking that it left me in awe. Lord Temptation 11,209
That is why I chose Faded Grey as the colour for Fun Tonight in the thread assigning colours to songs, as to me it represents a cloud storm.
Frostken 929
I actually like the fact that there's no drop in the first chorus. Just like Sour Candy and also Zara Larsson's new song Love Me Land.

Just straight forward pop songs with full-force choruses. Beat drops are a waste of time outside of club environments. When I’m listening to the album on the couch with headphones on, a beat drop is tedious to get through. Alice is a house song and has multiple drops- there’s literally one within the first 30 seconds, 911 is techno mostly and has several drops too. But the entire album is also straight forward pop for the most part in structure, message, melody, lyrics etc so idk what album you’ve been listening to sis 💀 All of dance music and a big part of pop music for the last 7-8 years pretty much has drops and they’re not a waste of time because they’re what gives you that rush of serotonin when the beat switches, Gaga practically brought back beat drops and four on the floor beats single handedly in her earlier work. Her most notorious beat drop is probably in Bad Romance between the “want your Bad Romance” and the last chorus. If that wasn’t there the impact of the last chorus wouldn’t hit as hard because the entire bridge into the final chorus is one big buildup and drop. Rifek 51,753
„Norris, a friend of BloodPop, had been brought on to help with “Fun Tonight,” a moody break-up song about a partner more obsessed with Gaga’s fame than her. The song had been “considerably slower,” as Norris describes, with a different arrangement before the BPM was turned up to match the rest of the LP.” ~ Rolling Stone ❗️ IG: thebumblebee__ ❗️

tyler k 5,330
I totally agree with this and have had the same thought. it's one of my favorite lil parts of the album because she totally subverts expectation (like always) by not giving the listener the beat drop there. I also think it's because she wants you to really listen to the lyrics and what she's saying, note that her vocals are super up front & forward thru the whole song. The production absolutely reflects the lyrics throughout the whole album and this spot is the perfect example of that. mmmy name ~isn't~ aliceee
Defmix100 6,371
I feel like the only one who wasn't expecting a drop or instrumental part at that bit, I didn't even know it threw people off till I saw some video reactions

I'm not sure I understand how the end BR chorus is a beat drop? It goes right into the chorus. I thought the difference between that and a beat drop is a beat drop focuses on the beat with little to no vocals

You clearly don’t understand what a “beat drop” is in this instance. It’s the instrumental breakdown after a quiet chorus where one is expected to “dance” in a club environment. i.e. The music after Sine Frome Above’s chorus, 1,000 Dove’s chorus, Replay’s Chorus etc.

I mean, with the drop, no instrumental kicks in to make you move your body. Yes I do. It might match the theme of the song but doesn't make it any less annoying. The energy just drops.
