I actually love it when people from other places tell me that a dish from my culture is their favorite. Some people just say it to be polite or be nice but others really mean it. I think it’s something to be proud of rather than offended by. I do kinda agree that they shouldn’t change the name on their package to “Trader Jose” because that’s just silly and I can see how it would offend some. However I would consider it being more insensitive than racist. I think people misunderstand the power that goes behind calling someone/something racist. Ironically, the teen who got them to change the name is not Hispanic either As an actual Hispanic - though I know I don’t speak for all Hispanics - I thought the name was cute and I did not perceive it as malicious. What I do find problematic is the fact that Mexican food in general is increasingly being capitalized on by non-Hispanics - it can be a little bit weird to find out when a Mexican restaurant or product is not actually owned by Mexicans, but that’s just me. I understand that if there’s a market for something, there will almost always be people of all walks of life trying to capitalize on it if they have the resources to do it.
