Doot 2
Trader Joe's has responded saying they will be updating a bunch of their packages.
Bonkers 30,860
I wouldn't call it racist to use one of the Spanish equivalents of "Joe" on a product that is considered "Mexican Food" (even though I don't think they use hard shells in Mexico) Remember to like and subscribe, and click on the bell icon to get the latest updates
Mark 4,065
Sorry for my ignorance but what is wrong with the packaging? 00026 † 10000
SineFromHell 160
This is a reach tbh. But good for them for getting rid of any potential backlash.
Franch Toast 27,737
Honestly, I think this kind of stuff distracts from real racism. The only problem I ever had with their packaging is that Trader Ming's obviously should've been Trader Zhou's (Zhou is pronounced similar to "Joe"). KindnessPunk28 1,506
These fringe movements are so damning to legitimate movements and fights about race. I feel it promotes the idea that all the people fighting for racial justice want are these "trivial" changes, when the end goal is much larger. Maybe my white privilege is clouding my thoughts on this, I don't know. But I think this energy needs to be focused more on dismantling the systems in place that promote racism before moving on to these smaller things. AsleepOnTheCeiling 6,965
Next they're not even gonna be allowed to sell "ethnic" food because the chain was started by a white guy. Why stop there though when we can just question why we call things such as hard tacos and orange chicken ethnic when they aren't even traditional foods in the places they're supposedly from. Borisapillar 10,128
How is translating a name into the language of the country the food comes from racist?
Siena 6,412
My first reaction is “ how is this racist?” But I recognize I’m not Hispanic so I wouldn’t be able to understand from their perspective. I’m curious though if people truly do find this offensive so please feel free to educate me.

But that’s exactly what one of the issues with racism is. As a person with Chinese ancestry, I don’t want some white guy telling me their favorite Chinese dish is orange chicken and all Chinese people are named Ming. Do you know that there are white people who will say they are more Latino or more Chinese than someone because they like tacos and orange chicken from Trader Joe’s and the person doesn’t? Simplifying centuries of culture into readymade digestible and acceptable portions for white people to enjoy is exactly why this is an issue and what the roots of racism are. This goes beyond food but it’s sure a good start. please enlighten me to death
