FfFfFfFF 58,382
About 800 million light-years away, a black hole devoured an unidentified object, and the resulting cosmic merger released enough energy to wrinkle the fabric of spacetime. These wrinkles, called gravitational waves, traveled through the universe and eventually washed over Earth where three detectors sensitive enough to measure such minuscule perturbations recorded the merger. The collision, called GW190814, stands out from the dozens of cosmic mergers detected by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO). While the heavier object is clearly a black hole, the less massive object is one of the few known celestial bodies in what’s called the mass gap between neutron stars and black holes. Somewhere in that gap, matter becomes unstable and collapses into a black hole—and neutron stars exist right on the threshold of that limit. “Nature imposes a limit to stable material density,” says Zaven Arzoumanian of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. “But we don’t know what it is or what happens to matter just this side of it,” says Arzoumanian, who’s the science lead for NICER, an experiment studying neutron stars from the International Space Station. OMF 3,673
Can I just say this: I’m not even sure if I believe any of these “discoveries” anymore. It seems we keep getting “new findings” which appear in news for a second and then fade to oblivion. Do I trust these news to be all real? Not really. 🤷🏻♂️
tomsches 17,553
What's gonna happen next, 2020? Are you gonna have a black hole swallow the planet?

What do you expect them to do with these “discoveries”? Do you want everyone to talk about them for weeks even though most of them aren’t very important or substantial? These are all interesting findings but not anything the world needs or something. Even when some exoplanet similar to Earth is discovered it’s too far away for anyone to do anything about it. I’m just saying I don’t necessarily believe all they say, I don’t trust organisations that much anymore. That’s all

I swear to god, the rise of right wing extremists really gave dumb people the extra arrogance push that makes them think they’re actually smart. Shame.
