The way I see it is - countries as a whole aren't homophobic, individuals are. It's not fair that the fans in a country should be denied the opportunity to see their fave perform on their home turf because of some BS laws their government's made. The government doesn't define the populace. And obviously, your fans won't (or shouldn't) be homophobic, so you're performing in essentially a safe space. And the artist is the one making the real money from putting on this show, not the venue. I believe that if you have a sizeable fanbase in a country, you should try your hardest to tour there. The only thing that should stop you is literal laws against making LGBT support known. And it's not like all your fans are rich enough to travel to the next nearest accepting country to see you perform, or it could be sold out there, so it's unfair on them in more ways than one. We don't choose the country we're born in, so treat them equally.

YES YES YES

It's actually impactful for LGBT icons to tour in homophobic countries. Because it actually makes a difference in the lives of those who have to live with that homophobia everyday.

You cannot really be an LGBT Icon/Activist by "promoting" LGBT rights in 2020's Canada as if there is any significantly represented groups that promote homophobia.

You get to be called an artist who is a gay icon/activist by actually challenging homophobia where it really exists...

mm I think the queer people in those countries deserve to see their faves despite their governments' actions, but I also think yeah it's providing money and exposure and very potentially outing people in those countries which could be a death sentence. Maybe they can do virtual concerts only to IP addresses from each specific country :flower:

Not to mention a safety risk for the performer.

Silence is complicity. Also there's a difference between gvmnts and real ppl. So imo under conditions it's acceptable. Anyhow, I think artists should speak up and not back down their artistic standards for censorship and... profit!
