Also not you forgetting TEOG which was at least ROM's level too!

I was reffering to post BTW era singles this time around. I can understand the confussion.

TEOG would be in in the Applause/ROM/ARUTW category. Yoü And I would be similar to MR. Judas would be slightly below, but not by too much.

Also, I don't think TC or SL are above MR. Radio or not, their reccurents are straight up garbage.

Finally, I wouldn't call Applause a signature hit. That is reserved for Just Dance, Poker Face, Bad Romance, Born This Way and Shallow. Applause can join when she gets 400k+ daily streams on Spotify and/or becomes a staple during Pride Month

When it comes to global success, MR is below The Cure since MR didn't have nearly as much radio support WW. Also Judas was a global hit and above Y&I/MR/TC everywhere except the US... It's mostly her fans that stream and know MR outside the US. But being a signature hit doesn't require to have 400k daily streams, I remember everyone knowing Applause back in the day, but it doesn't have enough playlisting on Spotify compared to others. :yennefer:

Radio support does not a hit make.

MR has more WW certifications, more streams, more views than The Cure. Sorry, but The Cure was a borderline flop.

And who cares that Applause was really popular when it came out? First of all, even that's an exaggeration. It was big, sure, but it was not even top 5 of songs during that time. More importantly, nowadays, it's mostly forgotten and thus not a signature hit by any stretch of the imagination. It didn't even make the cut for the SBHTS, not even the mashup before Poker Face.

Telephone, Paparazzi, Alejandro and maybe even TEOG would be next in line before Applause for signature songs after the big 5.

Anyways, @Pop Art spilled the :tea:

I still find it weird how The Cure was a Top 10 hit in Australia

I personally think while Stupid Love wasnt pulling big numbers, it was kinda well known especially it was followup of ASIB. Might put it into the judas category.

A top 40 hit in the US, charted for 14 weeks with no video. Certified platinum in the US, Australia and Italy, Gold in the UK. Doesn’t sound like a “borderline flop” to me :laughga:

I mean, if your standard for "not a flop" is getting in the top 40 on the Hot 100 and collecting some Platinum certifications here and there, we might as well say that every Gaga single exept G.U.Y. was a "hit" :nails:

I mean, you can have whatever standards you like. It's not that big of a deal. But I have a feeling this fanbase wouldn't be getting as defensive if I were to clasify Daisies or End Game or what have you as "borderline flops".

Not really comparable. Daisies was a full fledged single with video and heavy promotion. It was #40 for a week and stayed only a total of 7 weeks on hot100.

This doesn't really matter. Sure, standards are different for lead singles and promo varies from era to era. But at the end of the day, nobody really cares about that outside stan culture. A song is either a hit, remembered, cult classic etc. or it's not.

Seriously, it feels like some people cannot bring themselves to admit that their favorite songs are not well known or loved outside of their bubble.

Look, my fav Gaga single is Marry The Night. I could go ahead and pretend that it's a hit, because "it's a top 30 Platinum certified single that spend 12 weeks on the Hot 100", but that's just arguing in bad faith. Because, while those achievements might be impressive for some no-name artist, they simply do not reflect that a song was popular with the GP. The fact is, my fav Gaga single bombed so hard that it cut the BTW era short. At the time, it sold around the amount that some no-promo-non-singles from the TFM era were able to. Ten years later, it sometimes gets less daily streams than certain deep tracks on the same album.

Does that make me love it any less? Nope. I just accept that, despite my personal attachment to the track, it cannot be described as a "career highlight", "cultural reset" or even "minor hit" if we're trying to maintain any veneer of objectivity.

It's the same with The Cure or Stupid Love or what have you.

Like, if you prefer them over Million Reasons, good for you. But you cannot seriously argue they were bigger hits because some radio station in Australia and a bunch of European countries played them more. The numbers (certifications, views, streams etc.) just speak for themselves.

And it's really a trend within this fanbase. People taking their favorite songs and acting as if they were some big, iconic pop culture moments. Songs like Applause, TEOG and ROM being sneaked in alongside Just Dance, Poker Face, Bad Romance, Born This Way and Shallow... Just no. The latter bunch literally broke records when they were released and are amongst the best selling singles of all time. Getting good airplay for one summer doesn't make Applause a "signature hit".

And how do you know for sure it's just Monsters being delulu about their favorite tracks and arguing in bad faith? Because there is one other Gaga single that could arguably join the big five, based on its receipts. That song is Telephone. But you don't see it talked about so much here, because the fanbase doesn't really like it. If they did love it... boy would it be blasphemy to suggest Telephone is anything less than a decade-defining hit of the late-00's-early-10's.
