Where was the clear advice? There was no clear advice or guidance from the government. Absolutely zero. Having a 1m+ rule is useless... and did Boris REALLY consider people when they are drunk? Of course not. Pubs should have remained closed. People act differently under the influence. The advice from the government was so vague, it allowed for people to do what they did.

As I said, how can you expect people to do things properly if the government themselves are so vague about everything? I don't think its too much to ask for the UK government to actually look at the science, realise that the r-rate is still too high in England, and actually do something about it. You cannot put the blame solely on the people, or put most of the blame on the people. The man in charge is Boris Johnson, and his failings to do his job which is to keep people safe and eliminate the virus in England are very apparent. He should be the one to blame since he allowed it to happen in the first place.

He is not trying his best given the circumstances, it would be foolish to think otherwise. Anyone who is in a huge role will have criticism. But, if he looked at Nicola Sturgeon and saw how she is treating it in Scotland, he could learn a thing or two and actually run things properly.

You have to find a balance between the two... peoples lives need to come first. Whats the point on opening things up, having people in, for them just to get sick and possibly die? What's the point on opening up things for them to be shut down again? Peoples lives have to come first. Eliminate the virus, or get the r-rate low, then open back up again. If you think otherwise, you have your priorities all wrong like Boris does.

They released a 43 page guidance document on how pubs/restaurants etc are to prepare and reopen pubs. Long story short it's still against the law to have gatherings over 30 people, the scenes in Soho should not have ever happened and should have been dispersed by police. That 30 person limit doesn't apply in pubs since each table of customers are counted as small individual gatherings. However, businesses in hospitality should have done risk assessments before and put measures in place to before reopening to contain the small gatherings such as perspex screens, social distancing, one way systems, increased hygiene, table service, contactless payments, toilet restrictions etc to protect employees and customers. Businesses should be running on lower customer capacities, lower employee numbers to keep businesses afloat. Employers will have to pay 25% of furlough payments from August and many small businesses just simply cannot afford to do so. There will be a lot of people being made redundant this month.

As i said I don't think Boris has handled things perfectly, he isn't innocent. There's decisions he should have made a lot sooner, decisions he should have made later but we the people have to work together to reduce the spread of the virus. It involves the public showing some self-restraint, sacrificing normality temporarily. It's very easy to jump on the government but in this case though I don't think this was his fault.

The bolded parts are contradictory and is the reason why the guidelines aren't clear. And as someone said, they are guidelines. Not law. Its upto the police to interpret and/or enforce what they deem is necessary. Yeah, small crowds of upto 30 people is fine under what Boris says... but it doesn't apply to pubs. :billie:

Lives mean more than business. Period. He released lockdown too early, and its on him. Period.

30 person max gathering IS law, they had the power to disperse that crowd. Not entirely sure what is too hard to understand with the guidance, in pubs and restaurants there's no set person restriction since each table will be a small closed off gathering where customers should not move from their tables unless they are leaving or going to the toilet (restrictions apply). The area will be fully cleaned after they leave.

Again, this is all reliant on the individual's co-operation, the amount of lives being cost by failure to follow simple rules is the problem. We should have had a much stricter lockdown like other European countries. Of course this is going to fail if people can't adhere to rules, we'll end up seeing restrictions being put back in place and then everyone is going to whine and moan about not being able to go to pubs again . Maybe then people will get the message, doubt it though, they'll go to the beach instead :fthis:.

They were in pubs :billie:   thats the whole point! If you have a street with 5 pubs, bars or restaurants on it, and there are no rules or restrictions in those pubs, where are those people meant to go? You'll have MORE than 30 people in a pub or bar because there is no restrictions! Its ludicrous and crazy how you can't see that. The rule is no more than 30, yet there will be more than 30 people in a pub or bar... and if theres 5 pubs or bars on a street, thats a hell of a lot of people gathering in one place. Not just that, but we are talking about DRUNK people. When have you seen people that have been smashed into tomorrow with drink act responsibly? Cause I've yet to see it.

So under the governments guidance, there are no restrictions on how many people can be in a pub or bar at any one time, which can and will lead to overcrowding in pubs or bars, and if we take that in a street with several pubs or bars, you will have a huge mass gathering in the streets. Do you see the problem? This is what the government said is okay. This is what Boris has said to England that they can do.

If Boris has said that its okay to do what they are doing, of course they are gonna do it. Boris said its okay. You cannot blame the people for doing what they are entitled to do. If Boris didn't open pubs or bars, things would be much better and we wouldn't see scenes like what we did in London. BJ is doing herd immunity, which is incredibly dangerous and will send the figures up again. People think the virus has gone because Boris has eased lockdown. Its most Boris Johnson's fault, nobody else. He has the power to stop and control this virus, and stop it spreading. He isn't doing that at all.

Boris Johnson has never given simple rules... even his message "Stay alert"... what the fck does that do? It means nothing. Its been so vague the advice coming from the government, you just can't blame the people. Had he been firmer and more to the point, and given advice that makes sense, then people would listen and do things properly. If they still didn't, then you'd have a point. But this situation that y'all are in is perpetuated by Boris Johnson's lack of leadership, clear and concise messages, and failure to understand that the virus is on the rise again and the risk it would be by opening up pubs.  Boris has allowed them to do what they have done.

Lets make no mistake about it these aren't some unfortunate souls that got caught in a wave of people leaving pubs as others were heading to pubs, these people stood there and had a street party. This was a good thousand or so wanting a party, some even brought their own bottle. Guidance for businesses was to run on reduced capacity, operate safely for both themselves and their customers, obviously this wasn't followed and was not controlled. Social distancing? What is that? If I saw a street that crowded I'm turning back, its not worth the risk, obviously to these morons it was. You make out like these people were helpless in this situation. They have free will and a choice, no common sense though.

If what you're claiming is true and people genuinely think that the virus has gone away because of lockdown easing that makes me very sad and we need some serious money pumped into education. I'm going to go out on a limb and give them the benefit of the doubt that they have at least some intelligence. It's not like we've been bombarded with information and updates daily since this virus made its way over here. They found out that the pubs were reopening somehow, they were fully aware of the coronavirus situation in the UK. You can't escape it. Boris and co even warned people that the virus is still here as pubs were going to be opened, "we're not out of the woods" and they are willing to put the brakes back on and shut places down. If people know they are going to get shitfaced then maybe refrain from impairing your judgement to that level when you know it's not 100% safe out there? Perhaps that makes too much sense for them.

To those people in a few weeks - Don't pee on my leg and tell me its raining  Take responsibility for yourself

That's the reality of a city like London. From New Zealand to US, things arent different in similar cities.

This is so disappointing and disheartening to see, but I knew it was inevitable. Good job I’m still only leaving the house when absolutely necessary :madge:

Brexit, Boris, high COVID deaths, etc.

No need to get angry.

We're really nothing like the US. End of. We take what we have for granted in this country tbh, regardless of those 3 things.

Don't compare us.

Never did I say you are like the US. I said you are the USA of Europe. I’ll explain since it’s apparently not clear:

What I meant was you guys are a mess compared to other European places with COVID and worldwide perception - 2 things the US also has :rip:

It’s pretty comparable in terms of perception and I’m not the only one who’s said it.

This is how many view the UK outside the UK.

This is not surprising, yet still sad to witness stupidity at its best. Even in my country (Canada), they have re-opened everything and this kind of behaviour is everywhere, people don't care anymore and that's tragic.
