Hating artists because of their stans

Something that I read a lot is “I don’t like [insert artist] because of their toxic stans” or “their fans ruin the music for me”. Not only on GGD, but also on Twitter and other pop forums. I honestly never understood that statement... I got recently reminded of it because of the ‘Beyonce - Black Parade’ thread where a user said this about Beyoncé and fans. The comment got several ‘thanks’-reacts. So I decided to make a thread to discuss this. But let’s keep it cute and not some fierce discussion thread, okay?:selena:

My thoughts on it, which I also said in that thread:

What do fans have to do with an artist? Every fanbase has “toxic” (extremely overused word btw) people in it, but that doesn’t need to affect you or the artists music right? If I’d be affected by stupid stan wars that would mean I have to dislike Britney’s music, because her Twitter stans are annoying af. Or I’d have to dislike Christina Aguilera because her fans bring down Gaga a lot. I’d even have to dislike Gaga because let’s be real, a lot of Little Monsters are no angels either. I could go on forever...

I genuinely don’t see how random people on the internet you’ve never met can affect your listening experience with an artist they love. And in my opinion it shouldn’t. Artists are not defined by their stans.

Anyways my point is: it’s totally fine to dislike someone’s music, but blaming it on their fans feels like a cheap excuse to hate on someone. I’d like to hear what those stans/fans do that trigger people so much that they can’t even listen to music that’s unrelated to it.

So, what are your thoughts on this?:oprah:

Sometimes people don't meant that they truly hate the artist, only that their fans make them move away from them.

For instance I like Dua Lipa and her music (even though I am obsessed) but seeing how many people were using Future Nostalgia to prove a point about Gaga being unable to do good pop music made me not want to listen to her. This is before Chromatica was released, when almost everybody was hating Stupid Love. And that didn't meant I hate her or her music became bad.

If I hated artists because of their fans I would hate all the artists :spin:

because the negative association carries over to the artist, its psychological

Sometimes it feels like I've got a war in my mind, I wanna get off but I keep riding the ride

When an artist has fans that not only cyber-bullys but physically assaults other celebs because they think no one should be compared to their idol , I just cant take that.sorry

I agree, however I do think some fanbases are really annoying that I feel sorry for the artist

Always be kind to others, you may need them once

Well I can definitely understand it in this case. I wouldn’t classify this as hating. But my post was more about people using “toxic fans” as excuse to hate on a certain artist every chance they get. That I can’t get behind.

I guess there are some that simply hate that one artist and use fans as an excuse. But there are also people that liked the artist but fans ruined it for them, people that simply don't to be associated with said artist because of their fanbase etc. These are valid things.

But every (pop girls) fanbase has fans like that tbh:selena: (not talking about the physical assault part of your comment tho, I think that almost never happens)

Like every fanbase has a certain artist they hate on. If we are talking about Little Monsters Ava Max is a good example. The good sis did nothing to offend Gaga, but the fans are so mean to her. But does that make me love Gaga less? No. If that makes sense nnn

I do have a distate for Beyoncé mostly because her music has not been good since 2008, but also because of the hive. And it will not change.
