In before they have to change their name again because "chicks" is a derogatory way to refer to a woman. :ally:

(For real, I support their name change and am not making light of anything, but I wonder if at some point they're going to be criticized for "chicks" too.)

Were they? In the same genre as The Highwomen, Luke Combs, Miranda Lambert?

why:oprah: dixie refers to the confederate states (those who supported the continuation of slavery)

so how is is ridiculous that they decided to make this small and easy change in a move of support in current events?

It's ridiculous because the band did not use the term in this context.

They took 'Dixie' from the song 'Dixie Chicken' by a country group they admired.

Constant revisions like this frustrate me because language changes over time.

Words can start with one meaning and evolve into something new - that's the beauty of language.

'Queer' is a good example of this.

I mean, who knows from now... 'Gaga' could quite easily be deemed an offensive, mental health slur in the future. But we know Gaga's intention was to never 'offend'.

The point I'm making, I think, is that, surely, people should be judged by their intention? And it's unsettling to think that mob mentality and social media cries are turning artists into revisionists.

If art has to constantly 'tow the line' we will lose something special - and, sure, a name change is small. But it's the principle that matters here.

As a closing thought... the Lady Gaga we have today would not exist had she tried to please everyone.

And this is NOT to say an artist is free to discriminate or outrightly offend. But I think there comes a point when expression and intention should trump the 'fear of offence'.

To me it just sounds like a weird name for some backup singers in the 1950's.

They still can. The Grammy's are super liberal, they will love this change.
