As much as I support the sentiment, what does it mean 'all music is black music?' Like K-POP is black music too? What about oriental music? I think she's throwing out a blanket statement here... educate me if I'm wrong.

Yeah I don't personally see much division in the music industry. What's great about pop music in particular is that it's a mesh of many cultures and influences. It's probably the most diverse yet unified form of culture we have.

Heck, the majority of the world's most successful and influential artists are black. Michael, Aretha, Diana, Whitney, Stevie Wonder, Donna etc.

I don't understand why when non-black people enter hip-hop and rap scene it's quite taboo. Interestingly, artists like Iggy Azalea got slammed as a racist for 'mocking' the drawl and saying certain slang. The reality is that she spent so much time getting to know and bond with the black community in Georgia that she was just being herself. Eminem essentially had to bury his way into the industry because of this taboo too.

I fully support the context of this message outside of music, but this is a bit of stretch. It just feels like an empty statement from Gaga, which I don't want to say.

Rock n Roll started in the US by black people like Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Fats Domino, etc. Techno started in Detroit in the 1980s by black people and house music in the 1980s in Chicago by black people. Europeans took over black electronic music from America and adopted their sounds. Don’t whitewash techno and rock.

When you want to teach, why attacking? 🤔

Btw just because it calls "Detroit Techno" it doesen't mean it was the only precursor of Techno. In Europe electronic music was born and Techno evolved in Europe AND US.

I talked also about Rock (; - yes Rock'n'Roll influenced that genre very much.

I know that Black culture had a massive influence on American music and so on the whole world and pop culture. There sure exist certainly many other interesting facts about worldwide music history which we even don't know yet.

Thx for the informations, but please in normal tone.

Wait but what does that mean though?

Literally like every genre of music started with black culture / black musicians, I think she’s referring to this

Here's an article on the coalition:

https://www.rollingstone.com/pro/news/black-music-action-coalition-record-industry-1018726/

An array of artists, producers, songwriters, managers, record label representatives, attorneys, and other music executives formed the nonprofit Black Music Action Coalition (BMAC) on Monday. In alliance with #TheShowMustBePaused, the group wants to ensure that the music business — which is arguably kept afloat by black music and black creators — continues to combat systematic racism beyond a fleeting moment of uproar and activism.

In an open letter to colleagues, the coalition said it was inspired by recent efforts from players like Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, Sony Music, Apple, YouTube, BMG, and will work to ensure continual efforts, with an official plan coming within the next 30 days. “Our highest priority at this moment is to meet with each company’s CEO, senior management and your newly formed foundation boards to mutually develop a plan to address the deeply rooted systemic racism in our industry,” the coalition said, adding that it will examine “inequities in the treatment of black artists, the recruitment, advancement and salary parity of black executives, and a general analysis of how your company will make things right by black artists, executives and the greater community.” The coalition also aims to give the black community a say in how funds are distributed.

“The music industry unfortunately has not been immune to the systemic racism that plagues our country,” BMAC founding member Binta Brown, who oversees much of Chance the Rapper’s music-related strategies, tells Rolling Stone. “Fixing our society requires addressing the issues in music, media and entertainment, and it requires all of us working together. Our aim is to harness the power of music and activate our community to effectuate real, positive systemic change not only within the music business, but for our artists, black communities, and society as a whole.”

So far, 160 artists have signed onto the coalition’s goals. Billie Eilish, Cardi B, Harry Styles, Lady Gaga, Lil Nas X, Miley Cyrus, Nicki Minaj, Pharrell, Post Malone, Snoop Dogg, and Travis Scott — to name a few — have all pledged their support.

She's tweeting her support for the newly-formed "Black Music Action Coalition" which is:

"A mix of over 30 music industry executives and professionals including artist managers, attorneys, business managers, agents, and more have joined forces to form the Black Music Action Coalition—or BMAC. The goal of the new coalition is to advance racial justice across the industry–in addition to society at large–alongside greater communal efforts like the Black Lives Matter movement.

As per a report shared by Billboard on Monday, BMAC leaders hope to meet with the senior management of companies including Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, Sony Music, Apple, YouTube, BMG, and more to come up with a plan on addressing the deeply rooted systemic racism across the music and live entertainment industry pertaining to black artists and executives."

Africans have had large influence on American music, but you guys do notice that all instruments used by anyone (other than maybe bongos?) originate with Europeans?

I'm about done with Gaga.

Black artists are dominating the industry right now, so I don't get this.

This article explains it well, I think: https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-features/music-industry-racism-1010001/

But in short: we see a lot of Black artists doing well, but what we don't see is actually who is profiting from it. There's a lot of Black art available for consumption, but if its mostly benefiting white executives, then that's a huge problem (and one we, as consumers, don't get to see easily).
