Matthew "Dada" Williams is Givenchy's new Creative Director

Givenchy is gearing up for another creative reset.

The LVMH-owned brand announced on Monday that designer Matthew M. Williams, the 34-year-old founder of luxury streetwear-inspired label 1017 ALYX 9SM, will be its new artistic director, in the designer’s first major artistic director role. He succeeds Clare Waight Keller after her exit in April, and will present his first collection in Paris in October.

Williams will likely further push Givenchy in a streetwear direction, though he joins the luxury couture house during a period of turbulence for the fashion industry. The pandemic is expected to shrink the luxury market by as much as 35 percent this year due to store closures and decreased travel and consumer spending. His first collections will likely not be able to debut at the kinds of highly anticipated runway shows the industry expects from new creative eras at major luxury houses.

What ?! He is the last person I would have expected to be the director (no shade, in a good way) although I’m not looking forward to seeing the brand becoming more street wear as Givenchy is one of the last couture houses standing. I wonder if Gaga will wear anything by him?

Really? I’ve always seen Givenchy as one of the most “streetwear”-ish of all the big luxury brands.

They obviously got a few couture pieces but all in all it always felt like streetwear for me, but in a good way!

Ok no shade but aren’t we over streetwear at this point? We keep beating the same dead horse for almost 5 years now. I’m really tired of seeing the same collection on every single runway in just different colors and prints. I think it’s time we return to elegance and glamour and bring back value to clothes. The only good thing about this pandemic is that it’s going to reset the mindset of the costumer who won’t spend money like they did before on the same jacket from 5 brands each season. It’s tired and unnecessary and because of the rise of the streetwear market a few years ago this way of buying oversaturated the fashion industry with tons of collections each year from all these brands which not only didn’t bring in enough profit but also resulted in a lot of waste and polution. Its time we stop, fashion is dead anyway, lets just make beautiful clothes that will last a lifetime and mean something like how it was done before.

They really want the Riccardo Tisci streetwear customers back that Claire lost. I hope Matthew would bring back the craziness he had during his time with Gaga in  couture. He could keep all the streetwear stuff in RTW. Alyx seems to do well for what it is.
